Where I live, on the wrong side of the planet, stray dogs wandering the street is the norm. I like to go for a walk every night for an hour for exercise, but currently have to carry a big stick, just in case. I've been bitten twice over the last 20 years, and they do have rabies here, so predictably, I'm a little nervous...

Plus, some morning one of the wretched creatures will set up camp in the street, and howl at the moon, for hours....

So, what sort of effective proven dog deterrent can I carry to make the dogs change their mind about harassing me? Some sort of whistle or electronic device will do. I shall be visiting Blighty for a couple of weeks, so I can order or buy there.

I checked on Amazon, but the only one that had any sort of a decent review was out of stock, and the others were on the fence as to whether they even worked.

ps. I'm not a dog hater, we have 8 of our own.

I have exactly the same issue with neighbours (locals) dogs here in Indonesia.

Left to bark at all hours and roam the streets at will.

Can't say I'm scared of them as they never stand their ground. I see lots on my morning walks and always try to be friendly to them but they will usually keep their distance.

Every day twe have local's dogs that gather to bark at the dogs in a neighbouring villa who, small little excuses for a dog and safe behind 4m tall gates, love to yap back.

It's bloody annoying so I often pop out and launch a few stones at them.

Just ordered an ultrasonic device off eBay for £12 - we'll see how it goes.

I had a word recently with local neighbours about one dog that constantly barks - nothing can be done apparently, it's a dog and they bark. I did menttion this situation to my language teacher (we often have chats about culture as well as covering language, he is Indonesian) and he says that Indonesians won't take responsibility for their pets, They think the job of a dog is to bark and that they won't really hear it...whereas to those brought up in the West it's a real nuisance.

Cultural differences and all that.....

CS is useless on dogs.

What you actually want is a can of bite back spray.

Yep, they just carry on going but with more snot and slobber.

I use bite back at work and it does the job (police) every time. Granted its not as good as our taser shield but the OP wont want to carry one of those about. The good thing about bite back is that it doesnt harm the dog.

Cs gas would not hurt the dogs but might get them to think about coming back.

Certainly stones don't deter them for longer than 24hrs....

Bite back is a bit hit and miss but tends to give you time to move, my dog just wags his tail when he smells it!

Same here, the dog can bark in the house or yard all night long and they think nothing of it, they don't even notice! Our immediate neighbour has two huge dogs, and some days I'll see them barking their snot off while one of the family are doing something just five feet away, maybe talking to a visitor at the gate, and they don't make any attempt to shut them up, don't seem to notice they are making any noise.

"But they are dogs, dogs bark" is the exact same reply we get if we complain.

And if one barks all night: "They are keeping the ghosts away". For the love of god....rolleyes

Just ordered a tin, and three different types of dog whistles. The one with the best rating was out of stock last time I looked, but it is in now. I'll give them all a go, see what happens. biggrin

CO2 ones were very effective too.
If you can get it in your part of the world Pepper Spray also works on dogs.

FYI, useless on sheep too.

Some cyclists have used Dazer in the past. It's not 100% effective by any means.

£30. It doesn't hurt them, it makes a high pitched whistle (which we humans can't hear) which they don't like, so they move away.

Similar to what I have bought, although mine was (just checked) £6 from eBay.

Not sure if it's going to work in terms of what I need.

With the one problem dog (the real barker) I've found a back way in to their compound over a rear wall, so will be removing it at some point after dark.

Asked them very nicely three times now to sort it out......that's not happening clearly..

Haha, noise does seem to be a feature of expat life that doesn't register on local's' hearing range. My house in Ecuador is surrounded by a cacophony of barking dogs set off by the fkwit who whistles rather than just bloody knocking when he visits next door...

Not to mention the feral children at all hours. Perils of paradise island life!

I prefer to think of myself as an immigrant as I'm here for the long term.

It's mixed housing in my area so local's and 'bulle' like me. No feral kids though - being Bali everyone is very well behaved and polite. Just different cultural mores, standards etc.

I do find some of it baffling though. Which makes it interesting!

How did you end up in Ecuador?!?

On the dog front - my wife is very much against me going over there and slitting it's throat - so will wait for the ultrasonic gadget to arrive!
