Quick update, one of the neighbours used to make chip readers so scanned cat and she's now been reunited with a very relieved owner smile

Well that's a nice bit of good news! I'm sorry that you no longer have your new mate, but delighted that someone is no longer missing theirs. Good on you for sorting her out.

Thanks, I'm just glad for a happy ending. I'm sure she'll be back at some stage but it's nice to know that she has an owner who obviously loves her.

Yep, that was our view too, best to reunite regardless how cute and determined the newcomer is to stay with you. You'd hope in reverse circumstances that your own would come home. When our Golden was a pup he got loose on a walk, came straight home, knew where his dinner was, total gannet.

Thank goodness you actually got round to scanning the cat to get the owners details!

Cats do tend to choose owners, or rather staff. A mate adopted one, it moved in with his family and other cats, after a couple of years it decided it preferred the neighbours so it moved. He still saw it around but it stayed away.

If anything it's brought home the importance of chipping your animal; given she was missing for two weeks apparently, I'm suprised the owner wasn't knocking on doors (but feared she'd been run over and probably didn't want to know).

Certainly the poster who said , as she was friendly, she wouldn't be wild called it spot on. Expected her not to be chipped but very suprised when we found she was. Genuinely the friendliest cat I've ever met.

At least if/when she turns up again then I'll know who to return her to.

its also very important to introduce them to a new house properly, or they often will go looking for 'home'

This has just recently happened to us too, moved into current place about a year ago - most of the neighbourhood cats completely ignore us, apart from one who made herself very comfortable on the bonnet of my car (I suspect a straight 6 is an excellent source of heat) and always came over meowing when we get home. One day she randomly walked into our front door, and straight out the back.

Now it's summer and we leave the patio door open to prevent melting she's got particularly brave, and instead of walking straight back out again has done some exploring - upstairs to the living room, and even further up to the bedroom, where she is currently asleep on the bed.

Friendliest cat I've ever seen, loves being fussed (even by two complete strangers), but looks a bit on the skinny side and spends more time drinking out of the water feature than can be healthy. The OH is a bit concerned for her and started feeding her - strangely enough now every morning when we go downstairs there is a car waiting to be let in.

The OH blatantly wants to keep her, and I am not opposed as we have no other animals, can't help thinking we're stealing a cat though. I assume best bet is to get her to a vet to get chips read and make sure she's healthy?

Drinking lots could be a warning sign.

This is why we took our cat to the vet where we found out he is diabetic.

You should get it checked to be safe, it might also be chipped so at least you will know.

Uh, how to break this to you... If she's asleep on the bed, you are already keeping her......

May as well get some pet mince (raw meat)

Must admit neither of us are too upset about this, as she seems to be a lovely cat, don;t think I've ever come across one this affectionate - she's almost more like a dog at times, following the OH round the house.

Just need to make sure we aren't depriving someone of their cat. Will get her over to the vet ASAP.

We haven't managed to get her to the vets yet, however I haven't spotted her drinking out of the fountain since we started feeding her proper food (well, Whiskas) rather than the dry treats we bought. Can't feel a microchip, and she is still without collar, however she turns up at our back door at 6 in the morning and gets let out at 11 at night.

I think we've both fallen for her, big time if I'm honest. She was looking a bit skinny when she first started turning up, 2 weeks later she has definitely put on weight. She spends most of the day either sleeping on the bed or on our knees getting fussed.

Still trying to figure out if we're horrible people or not for not trying to figure out who the owner is. She's never locked in, and is always free to go home - however, from what I can tell she never does.....

Nope. Cats to me go where they want. If they think you best suit their slave needs, then you it is.

Also, hopefully you will consider switching to raw food, it's a little harder but much better for your cat.

Thanks for the update, and glad to hear she's well and happy.

My cat is more than happy with Whiskas or Felix pouches and doesn't seem to need to drink anything on top of that, although I do provide water just in case. She finds raw food a bit tough but loves a bit of cooked chicken or ham as a treat.
