Without wanting to jump in to the OPS thread too much, buthat it doesn't seem worth starting a new thread as it's fairly similar.

I've got a 50 something litre tank, unheated at the moment as my last fancy has just died.

I would like to get some tropical fish, are there ones that are easier to look after than others? With a tank my size, what's the maximum number I should be looking at? Or is it too small?

A rule of thumb is that the cheaper fish are easier to keep. The livebearers are pretty hardy - that's guppies, platys, swords and mollies. They tolerate a reasonable range of water pH, hardness and temperatures.
Other good starter fish are white clouds and danios .

However 50 litres is still on the small side ...

Three and a half weeks after the holiday disaster, and my water parameters have been good for 2 weeks.

So it was a 40% water change yesterday and another 20% today to get it all as shiny as possible, then half a dozen cardinals and a bunch of new plants back in. No worries about parameters as I took more inches of juvenile guppies out than cardinal inches put back in smile. Bloody plants came with some black algae on... Not impressed but something for the inbound shrimps to have a go at.

Need to get a couple of mosaic cory mates for my one survivor but nothing in today. Shrimp shopping tomorrow, nothing fancy just Amanos and Sakura or Fire grade RCS (don't worry, in different tanks).

Need a small shoal of celestial pearl danios for the shrimp tank and I am done. Then it is just a case of explaining to the missus all the time that the fish she wants "will eat the shrimps / not have enough space to swim / get long fins nipped / eat everything else" etc smile

Went to Lynchford Aquatics yesterday. Everyone is now in and seemingly happy.

10 nice CRS and 6 celestial pearl danios replacing the bioload of a lot of outbound juvenile guppies in one tank. Hopefully that will be the end of our livebearing hassle.

2 mosaic cories to provide some friends for my surviving one, and 4 amano shrimps into the other. Again, a big clear out of babies to make space.

All happy, although the cories and Amanos are a little shy at present as expected. CRS went straight in and treated their tank like an all you can eat buffet smile One has moulted already. Amanos eating but not so voraciously. CPDs are shy when we approach the tank but looking ok so far. They will learn where their food comes from and approach us over time I guess.

Drip acclimatisation over 2 hours is a pain but seemingly worth it. Gonna make a Java moss wall or carpet (undecided) to hide from the CPDs what I hope will be a lot of nice, red offspring. Slightly more profitable offspring than guppies methinks and fun to watch grow too smile

I must have got lucky. I do get on well with the folks there and do spend small amounts regularly with them. But the fish were healthy, very pretty colours, and I only bred from the original pairings (originally bought from them) maintaining the strain. Frankly, they were good stock, so rather than getting paid cash for them, I got stuff in exchange... which was nice smile

To be clear as I mentioned Lynchford previously. This was not the place who took my juveniles. It was my local aquarist who offered to do it, I did not ask and for obvious reasons (inundation) I will keep them anonymous.

Hmmmm. Slightly confused. I have 2 julii cory, 10-12 CRS and 6 Galaxy rasbora in the tank plus a bunch of snails imported on plants. A couple of Galaxy rasbora said were playing Barry White and doing the dance on entry to the tanks on Monday.

I now have half a dozen isolated eggs stuck to the glass or plants about 2.5 to 3 mm diameter. There may be others but the planting is quite dense and fluffy. I am thinking that they are too big for dropped CRS eggs and not clustered. Too big for snails eggs too. I don't really have anything to take a picture with, but they are clear with a white smudge inside. One (only) seems to have a black dot - a bit like an eye, but could be anything like a bit of algae on the glass where it is attached.

My guess is Galaxy rasbora eggs but they do seem quite big for such a small fish. Any thoughts?
