Choosing a dog breed
Discussion
have had three non shedding breeds over the years:
small = Shih Tzu, about 7kg - I think, while ago now. Small dog/big personality - he was convinced he was at least collie sized & not at all a yappy/snappy little lap dog
medium: Tibetan terrier about 9kg, now 14yrs. Great characters - fun, lively, but they are susceptible to PRA, a congenital eye disorder, which we unfortunately didn't research. Double coat though, which needs regular maintenance
medium+ = Cockapoo about 13kg, now 1 yr. Fantastic personality - playful, wants to be everyone's best friend, although we deliberately chose a timid one as our tibetan is elderly & nearly blind now. Likes a swim. V bright too, so needs stimulation. Comments above are right - they aren't a KC breed (yet? I hear it might happen?), so you need to check breeders carefully - we just asked our friends where they got theirs from.
all fine with kids/toddlers - zero snaps/bites over almost 20 years & 0 to minimal slobber - I couldn't be doing with all that....gaagghhh...
Otherwise: couple of friends have Cockapoos - same findings as us, lovable, friendly. Another has a Cocker spaniel - (a long distance addict - the dog not the owner) & Cavachon (Cavalier vs Bischon): characterful little guy

As we all know there are only two types of dog breeds, Boxers being one and other dogs the second. Of these I would always go for a boxer, great with kids, correction, really great with kids, low shedding and highly amusing. I like Labrordoodlefishonpugterriers but they are not a patch on a boxer, which of course is formed from a totally unbiased opinion.
Whatever you choose I personally would go dog before baby, puppies are hard work and you would want the training, place in pack etc sorted before a new baby arrives.

A thorough & well argued proposition. I would only add that the fully representative sample I've met - two - have been the most eye wateringly lethal, self perpetuating fart factories imaginable. Lovely dogs mind you...13m said:

How about a Lhasa Apso cross Poodle? Here is Poppy.
My partner has a 'thing' about dog hairs and has never really allowed a dog into her property before but Poppy is allowed to wander anywhere.
Her granddaughter has a allergenic response from dogs but happily picks her up without problems.
Oh and she is about the size of a large cat (but barks like a lion).
Before.
Usual summer cut.

Having been brought up with springers, German shepards, Sprockers and Staffords personally I would say staffords. They have great personalities

OP said he wanted a dog that doesn't shed. That rules out most of the replies on here (no matter how much you love your own dog).
Personally I think this current trend for selling cross breeds as cockapoos or whatever can cause problems. Uncontrolled and you don't know what you might end up with, health and behaviour issues.
I'm dogless at the moment due to work commitments but I've had Airedale Terriers for many years before that. Don't shed, loving, loyal, intelligent and great with children. They are the TVR of the dog world, a rare sight, always gets attention when you are out.
This was Harry, very sorely missed.

I was waiting for someone to take a pop at crossbreeds. Always a matter of time on threads like this.

This is also a concern, images of said dogs varies massively, as it depends on the makeup of its bloodline, and inherited potential problems. With them not being a registered breed its all a bit hit & hope.
Whereabouts are you? If you're happy to travel to Lincolnshire I can send you a PM with some details of a very good breeder.I'd fully recommend a Beagle, our Mable is 5 months old now and great fun to have around. She's great with our God children and nephews and loves cuddling up in the evening. She's food mad so easy to train as she will do anything if she thinks she will get a snack! She's questionable off the lead at the moment and I keep finding her white hairs on my black car seats but she sheds less than SWMBO so I can't really complain.
