Or maybe some assasin snails? They shouldnt breed in there but will eat the smaller snails.

The Trumpet snails are not all bad - they are great for cleaning up gunk under the substrate and turning it over, but they can also devour plants during the night.

I used to trap mine overnight in a weighted chinese food container with some courgette inside it, with a few small holes stabbed in the box, and then drop them into my puffer tank, but I also had a clown loach that would keep the numbers manageable.

As a follow up to this, save starting a new thread,

Been getting on for four years with my set up now and its gone well, have a healthy looking community aquarium but am looking to perhaps upgrade from my 120 ish litre job to somethign a bit bigger.

Depends partly on the wife, would like a tank in the main living room, mine is currently in the front room/man cave where I work but its behind me and its not the best position.

Was thinking of getting one of these,

Could possibly go to the 350 litre Rio if its in the living room but not sure she wants it in there, would look ace but not everyone likes fish tanks, she does but not necessarily in that room.

Would keep my existing one if she relent and may try my hand at Cichlids.

Any pointers, on the fish side, not the wife bit smile

Any better makes ?

What are Cichlids like to keep, would love to go Marine but looks like a lot of work, The tropical takes an hour a week or so which is fine.

Jacko, try looking at ND Aquariums and Aquariums4life...

IM not a huge fan of Jewels for a number of reasons.

You say Cichlids - what type ?

Malawis are great fih, but by christ they be evil feckers.......

Tangs are strange and interesting, as are Shellies....

Try to buy stock from hobby breeders rather than LFS...

If want quality Wild Malawis, message me as I kow a very good importer......

Peacocks, Haps or Mbuna?

I’m looking at Peacocks for my latest setup.

Whereabouts are you based?

I've got a Fluval Roma 240 that I'll be moving all my fish out, to my new house and draining. You can have it for free if you'd like, It's in Manchester.

Just set up the new planted tank, waiting for it to cycle, I guess I should post it on the aquarium thread smile

Hi, sorry I missed that post !

Going though a process on placement at the moment, was going to be another in the kitchen but might be a properly big tank in the back lounge, only problem is there are patio doors and and a window so might be a bit too much light.

Thinking 450/500 litres.

Any tips on cleaning a tank of that size, appreciate its just more of the same but need to hump 2 or 3 buckets when I do a water change, syphon out to remove the old water and then the same back in, filled at the tap to a reasonable temperature with some water conditioner in.

I can probably get a pump and just syphon the water out of the patio doors onto the garden, but is there a shortcut to filling other than carrying 10 buckets of water, do any of you just add water straight from the tap at mains water temp and let the remaining water and heater bring it up to temp and add the conditioner into the tank ?

Got a pump and a hose, made changing water a lot easier, can just leave it running and check on it, and can change more water, more easily, cost £23 for the pump and 30 metres of hose.

Sorry. I also missed your other post. Tank is gone now anyway and the previous residents are in a nice new 300L tank.

In terms of filling/emptying the phython no spill sink attachment pipe I’ve got works wonders. It was a bit pricey but it makes the job so much easier. Attach it to the tap, run the water to start draining the tank, turn the switch at the bottom to fill tank up from the sink.

Python No Spill Clean and Fill Aquarium Maintenance System, 50-Feet https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000255NXM/ref=cm_sw_r...

Generally I’ll clean the glass, drain 50%, then When filling up I add warm water from the mixer tap and stick the water conditioner in.

Looking at that Python siphon - am I right in think it uses the same hose to initially siphon water out, but does to refill straight from a tap? With no dechlorinator or water conditioner?

Yes, just add Prime direct to the tank.....

TBH, you dont need to buy a ready made python.

I used to put the hose into the tank, then connect to the tap and run enough tapwater to clear the air and create a natural siphon, then just disconnect from tap whilst kinking the hose (to maintain syphon) and dump into garden.....

Yeah, just put the conditioner in the tank before you fill it back up, not a problem with the filters off. It's a pricey way of doing it but it is remarkably convenient. Mind you I've had mine for 7 years now? Obviously wouldn't work for saltwater tanks.
