Hi

We've recently got two cats from a rescue centre. Had them about a month and they are still super nervous but getting better.

They are 7 months old males; a tabby and a black and white.

Can anyone give me an idea of how much I should feed them? They are getting approx 300 grams per day of wet food each at the moment and I leave biscuits out to snack on. I don't want to overfeed them though.

Also they are really good at using the litter tray but for some reason one of them peed on our leather sofa. That's the only accident in a month apart from a dump on my daughters bed, both on the same day oddly. Anyway the couch is some sort of raw leather/hide, not sure exactly but is very soft to touch. Anyone got tips on how to get the smell of cat pee out of it please?

Thanks
Mike

Are you changing the litter regularly enough?

Mine gets a pouch for breakfast and dinner, some biscuits for lunch and supper. If he's eaten it all, these no more. Most cats in the UK are overweight.

So 200g of pouch food and some biscuits. As I thought then, I'm probably over feeding at 300g plus biscuits.

Yes changing the litter as soon as we see something in it. At least twice per day.

We have two cats, they get a pouch each for breakfast and another each for dinner. Unlimited dry food and water available. They're indoor cats but they self-regulate, their vet has never suggested that either of them are overweight.

You can get this stuff for removing stains and odours from carpets etc., it comes in a green spray bottle - I can't remember the name of it, our local pet shop sells it and it works really well, not sure if Pets At Home etc. do it or not. I'll try and remember to check it this evening and post back.

Ours share one litter tray. If we see poo we remove it with a tray scoop and flush it down the toilet (not all litter will flush away so you might want to use dog poo bags and put them straight in the outside bin). Other than that we do a full change of the litter and liner every second day, or more often if there's a lot of damp patches in the litter. We tend to fill it maybe 3cm or so deep so there's quite a bit of litter to absorb their pee.

This approach appears to be deemed satisfactory by our feline overlords, the older one will occasionally poo just outside the box if we've failed to clear out any other ones in there in a timely fashion.

They'll come round and stop having accidents as they grow to feel more comfortable. Well done for taking in two from a rehoming/rescue center too. Have fun, and a photo or two is the done thing here smile

Great thanks for the info. I have reduced their feed to 100g in morning and 10g evening and biscuits available all day (and water of course).

I'll get some pics as soon as I can get near them without freaking them out too much.

This is the stuff I was talking about for cleaning stains and odours:

http://www.petsathome.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servle...

As above, we've used it to good effect in the past, seems quite good at getting hairball stains etc. out of carpets certainly. As always the advice would be test on an inconspicuous area first smile It's better than regular cleaners at getting rid of smells, not just that we can smell but that the cats can smell. This should dissuade them from messing in a certain area again.

Thanks! Have bought a bottle. They have not had any further misdemeanours.. all very odd perhaps something upset them that day ! We have introduced a new litter tray downstairs so they have a choice of two. They seem happy sharing.

BTW still unsure about the feed quantity. I read the back of the kitten pouch box and it says to feed a 6 to 12 month old upto 4.5 packs per day!! That is 450g which seems like a lot.

I have cut their food down to 100g wet in mornings and another 100g in evening and biscuits all day. They seem happy enough though someone did comment that they seem a bit thin!

Anyhow will leave as is for now and see how it goes. They are not going to starve as they have biscuits on tap.

Cheers... will get some pics up.

Nice cats, they look like they'll be a lot of fun smile

Regarding the food, most cats will self-regulate according to their needs. We put out one pouch each in the morning and another pouch each in the evening plus a bowl kept topped up with dry food. Sometimes they seem to go more for the dry food and there'll be some wet stuff left come next meal time, sometimes they're more into the wet stuff. Ours are 10 and 7 now and get checked at the vet twice a year, they've never been concerned about their weight.

Thanks.... they are slowly warming up to us!!!

Food.. hmm the wet is always gone, bowl picked clean. Dry is usually left a bit in the bottom. I will increase by half a ouch (1 between them) if I see them looking for food. They are still kittens so presumably have a higher calories requirement...

Something I've noticed and I wonder if anyone else's cat is the same.. these two don't seem to like to sit in front of the wood burner but rather sit in the cold coservatory!? Or in the hall way which is also cooler than our living room.

I thought cats loved warmth!
