The neighbours whose back garden adjoins onto ours have a cat.

The cat is well fed and clearly not neglected in that sense, however, it's been really bugging me all winter that on several occasions they can see the cat quite clearly wants to come in the house, yet they ignore it. It stands on the window ledge looking longingly inside at its owners who act like it isn't there.

It stays outside for hours on end in all weathers. It does spend time inside the house as I've seen it inside on several occasions through windows. It's clearly fed well enough and cared for in a basic sense (despite not being neutered - don't get me started on that one).

Am I just being over sensitive that this is bothering me? There are no doubt thousands of cats at any time out in the nasty weather, who don't have any human care whatsoever, so this shouldn't bother me, but it does. I think it's because we have our own cat and know how much love and affection he gets, that it makes me sad to see him looking longingly inside all the time while sat out in the wind and rain.

They're not the sort of people you can have a sensible conversation with about these things (*cough* chav *cough*). And of course there could be a reason why, such as a frequent visitor to the house having a severe allergy. It's not my business I guess.

What are your thoughts?

They'd probably brick it up.

If the cat was really p!ssed off with where it lived, it would go somewhere else. You sound a nice bloke, feed it, and it will come and live with you.

PS, we have a micro chip cat flap, and during the day our cats come and go as they please. We, unlike some, will clean out their litter tray as many time as we have to. They live here, it's their home, if they want to sh!t in it, they can.

I used to have a cat that would do this, when you get up and open the door to let it in, the fecker just sits there starting at you.

Yeah that's what I figured to be honest. There's plenty of areas of shelter and stuff around so I guess it can't be that perturbed by its situation! Haha living with us definitley isn't on the cards, our cat fights with it frequently!! We have a chip flap too for ours, they're great! Luckily ours absolutely detests using his litter tray for anything...erm...solid, so we get off lightly cleaning wise!

I don't class keeping a cat (that can go outside) unneutered as being as well cared for as it should be, chances are it pees in the house as a result, hence why they keep it out so often!!

Amazed it doesn't wander more tbh, glad it doesn't reduces its risk of being hit by a car or fighting other cars. What I don't understand is if you don't want a cat in the house much is why not at least provide it with outside shelter, it is not difficult to do.

I don't think there is much you can do unless you fib and tell them he keeps pestering you to come into your house and are a bit concerned as to why etc..... otherwise if he is fed, of good weight, provided with medical care when needed it is their decision how they 'keep' him. Not neutering though is irresponsible, enough stray/unwanted cats around he doesn't need to add to that!

Cat's do that. It is nothing to worry about.

If they let the cat in it would most likely ask to go straight back out again within 10 minutes. They love winding up their owners.

That's exactly what ours does. Its the cat letting the owner know who's in charge!

^^^So does our Louis. I'm contemplating inventing a remote control device so I can open & close the sliding patio door from my chair as I'm starting to wear a groove in the carpet between the chair & the door!

Friends have a cat that does this... then immediately sits by the back door and yells until it's opened.

Just can't be bothered to go the long way round. smile

The people who live opposite me has a cat who has mastered opening the kitchen window just to get out. He comes over & sits on our bench in the front garden & loves it there. I was told yesterday that they are moving down to Cornwall over the weekend so my little buddy will be gone for ever. frown

This is one of many times he sneaked his way into our house. biggrin
