Lol.

I love all animals and I absolutely will not hurt one. Unless I have to...

I have two jobs, keep my boy happy keep him safe. The thought of him losing an eye or injured any other way would kill me.

A gentle kick won't hurt a cat and if it's attacking relentless then it's sad but get it off your dog.

Strange how some dogs are scared of cats. Loads of YouTube videos about it.

Yep cats can be psychotic at times and very little will deter them once in that mode, I know!!

Who knows what triggered this cats behaviour today, maybe on edge from an earloer run in, who knows, all I know is I do not blame the OP or his poor dog this was purely on the cat!!!

Kicking however is not an option. They are vulnerable to internal injury/hernia's if a kick is dealt in the wrong way (doesn't have to be hefty either) a shove would be more appropriate.

OP keep an eye on the wounds, hopefully superficial but cat scratches can turn nasty, if not healing on next 48hrs get them checked.

A chat to the owner sounds a good idea. You can only try. They are not legally obliged as a dog owner would be but hopefully they will tryand see if it can be avoided on future.

Hope your poor boy feels better tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice/kind words.

He's fine and is a real tough dog (physical wise), he's just sulking and milking it - I think it's the shame of getting beat up by a cat. laugh
He's been on high alert though, which is concerning - He learns very quick when it comes to taking st off people/other animals but he doesn't discriminate (i.e. other cat's are fine, this specific one is in trouble).

I had a good look at him yesterday/this morning and they are more puncture wounds than scratches and hard to see under his fur - the cats swatted him with his claws so his face was covered in lots of red dots. He was more bothered by the salted water I used to clean the blood up with.

It's the second time this cat's shown this behaviour - A few months back it followed me and the dog up the road for a few minutes (getting too close for comfort). Today I've been a very similar route but purposefully made sure I was across the road, the cat was there and it ran through the hedge to the neighbours drive then sat and hissed. It explains how it got to me so quickly yesterday and it's definitely a territorial thing. The issue is it's my regular walk and the only way of avoiding the house/that side of the street is either crossing x3 roads in a very short space or to avoid the area completely a good 5-10 minute detour. I'm a bit stubborn so i'm not going to be dictated by an an asshole cat. biggrin

I'm waiting a few days for the local authority to get back to me then, subject to the response I'll go see the owner.

On another note, i'm 99.9% sure I know which house it belongs to, I've looked at the house on streetview and the very cat's on the drive!!

Be careful wielding a water pistol, and pointing it at a cat - Some of them have a few guns of their own you know !!

Really pisses me off that cat owners dont have a responsibility for their animals. Three around my way that are little sts.

One of them was on the pavement in a walkthrough I use often walking the dog. as we approached it just stood there, normally cats shift when they see me and a large dog coming. Got within about 10ft and the bugger still wouldnt shift. Dog is going mental, she absolutely hates cats and I have no idea why, never had a bad experience with one.
Cat still not budging, so I shout and stomp my feet at it and it gets its claws out and starts hissing at me. Thought fook this. had a look around and noticed someone had discarded a half drunk can of stella in the verge so I picked that up and lobbed it at the cat and it shot off. Not seen that one since.

Another one was similar to OP we were walking along a residential street and the cat came chasing us along the pavement hissing. Dog has turned and is going mental at it and its just hanging 10ft away following us back up and hissing. While I'm trying to drag a very angry barking dog along the road waking everyone up. Cat gave up after about 5 houses.

Third one is a more regular pain in the ass in that it keeps scratching our cars. Bonnet, boot and roof covered in paw prints and scratches where the tt keeps slipping. Last week it decided to climb the side of my car instead so I have a muddy window and some 2 inch long deep scratches in the door and a rip in the door rubber.
Cheeky fker was sat on my drive waiting for me to bring it a nice warm car the other night, I got out and chased it away.

Really annoys me as if my dog was out unsupervised squaring up to other people and their pets and vandalising their property it would be put down pretty sharpish and I would be in some sort of trouble.

It annoys me too, and we've got three of them. One occasionally craps in my neighbour's garden. It's embarrassing and believe me if there were a way to stop it I'd be all over it. Unfortunately they just don't understand property - they seem to think everything's theirs

You could try keeping them indoors and taking them out for supervised exercise like us dog owners have to. Then you could see where they poo and collect it and make sure they aren't killing half the local wildlife and damaging peoples property smile

Seriously? The cat is clearly trying to protect its territory, yes it is being an asshole but suggesting an action which could seriously injure it is very disturbing.

Most cats will back down and run away with lots of noise and gesticulation. OP, if you think you will encounter it again, a water pistol is a harmless yet very annoying to cats deterrent. Perhaps knock on the door (without the dog) to let the owners know their cat is being a dick may result in some action by the owners. You never know, not every pet owner is a dick either.
With the greatest respect, how many dog owners carry a bloody water pistol!!!! I go on regular walks with about 50 greyhounds and their owners. I would be amazed if one was carrying a water pistol.

Also, how are going to gesture and make lots of noise to a ct whilst you are trying to defend your dog? Its just not going to happen.

I know a few techniques to separate fighting dogs and I would be willing to use all of them to protect my hound or child. Cat might be a bit more complicated, but if needs a shove to get it off the dog, then thats whats going to happen.

Owner could report it, but owners won't give a f@&k. Best hope you have is they might have a dog as well and they could give you a bit of sympathy at the door, but they aren't going to have the cat put down on your command. Not even sure what a dog warden would do in the situation of cat attacking dog.

Interesting comments about violence towards animals

I've been in situations plenty of times where a dog is threatening my kids. Is it ok to boot the dog into next week in that situation?

Edit: unless there is a real and significant threat it is wrong to hurt an animal under any circumstance

No, no, just wait until AFTER it has bitten your kids, show what a real genuine animal lover you really are.....

A bit like dogs, who will crap on roads, pavements, wherever they feel like it.....except the owners take responsibility to clean it up.....unlike cat owners..... tongue out

Some owners, plenty on the pavements round my way suggests several owners aren't responsible at all.

Agreed

On my way home from work I now walk in the road if it's dark as it keeps my shoes (and carpets) a lot cleaner

If I could identify my cat's st and gain access to neighbour's gardens to clean it up, I probably would

As an update to this thread,

I've only come across the cat once more, I noticed it sat on the drive and I crossed with the dog immediately; my Mrs who was with me at the time was in a world of her own and kept on walking. I noticed the cat dart through the hedge to next door and proper his at my Mrs where she duly crapped herself and ran across to me.

I've not seen it since, or heard back from the council either. I have spoken to a few other dog owners in the area and it appears they've all had a run in and know the psycho cat well. One being a huge, yet young rottweiler who's owner says the cat followed them up the road hissing (similar to my first encounter). I give the cat a few months until it gets eaten laugh

This has been some good reading and glad to see other cats have a death wish and not just mine.

My OH does the local Avon run and all the neighbours comment on our cat following her around and also coming round on his own to annoy the local dogs and cats. He’s been known to sit on fences and even windows sills pestering dogs and cats.

One womans dog is so terrified of him she has to carry the dog past him in the street and the big German Sheppard down the bottom once went for the cat, only for him to stand his ground which spooked the dog.

As the OH talks to all the owners we know he’s never been aggressive to any of them but he is not scared of them. Fully expect an accident when one of the local lurchers get him.

The postman is also a regular in her work and he is terrified of him as well, but I’ve seen the way he arches up and hisses at them so I don’t blame him. He protects our house, the neighbour and the two houses opposite.
