Oh my god, I haven't laughed so hard in ages!

Having got 4 cats, a rbbit, a hamster and a recently deceased fish, I can relate to all of that!

I took my tom cat (called Tom ) out on a roadtrip with me... It went something along the lines of..

sat outside of house, phone rings
answer phone
agree to pop over to grandparent's house, which is about 2/3mles away
cat already sat in car
lock house, jump in car, start engine
cat climbs onto my knee
start moving... cat senses this and runs to window
cat miaows pitifully at window
retrieve cat from dashboard
put cat on passenger seat
turn corner
retrieve cat from my lap
put cat on passenger seat
retrieve cat from top of steering column
put cat on passenger seat..
retrieve cat from drivers footwell

and so it continued all the way there, and all the way back...

The same cat is a little sod... if there is even a whiff of any food, he has to be there... we had a friend round, and we had put a pizza box down CLOSED with one slice left in... next thing we know, the cat is off under the table with the pizza slice.. Its the noises that he makes that are the funniest... they have got to be heard to be believed... if he is eating something and one of the other cats even goes near him, he goes 'numnyumnumynum', its hilarious!

And as for cats crapping... I don't let mine beyond the garden, as we are sandwiched between one of the major roads out of stockton and a railway line, but my dad and grandad have found that throwing things, in particular tea-towels helps to keep them away!

We're off on hols tmrw and have to get 2 cats to the cattery today. But as predicted one of them has gone to ground and there's no trace. Bu$$er. Looks like it will have to fend for itself for 2 weeks. Wife's just about lost the plot and threatening all sorts of retribution on the poor moggy for causing such angst. I'm sure that the cat can sense the tension from half a mile away and the last place it's going near is the room with the cat transport box in it!!

Been there done that - grovelled to the neigbours who very kindly fed the horror.
Found out afterwards the cat had climbed into the engine bay of my wife's Fiat Punto and hid. We could tell this by the layer of matted fur on the under-body insulation!

My elderly foster-cat has perfected the Starfish Manouver for avoiding being 'boxed' for the trip to the vets. Last time he was in such a bad way that we gave up in the end and he rode in my PA's arms, wrapped in a blanket - he was happy and stayed quiet, nobody got clawed - all good really!

My wife and I once took a dog to the vets, in a shopping bag, on a motorbike hehe

The dog loved it, mouth open, tongue flapping in the breeze.

That is hilarious. rofl

As soon as our cat saw the basket coming out, he did a runner, so we had to make sure the cat flap was locked, catch him whislt wearing gardening gloves, then wrap him in a towel and blindly put him in the basket.

Last night I heard one of our cats going mad in the dining room, seemingly trying to dismantle the dining table bit by bit. As I was half pissed I ignored it and went back to sleep. Got up this morning to find fur everywhere. Made a brew and was looking for my other slipper so I could go out for a fag. Found said slipper behind a table, covered in fur/holes/teeth marks etc. Put slipper on and felt something inside, took it off and gave it a shake, out pops an half dead mouse that has now been squished into and odd shape by my big toe rolleyes

Cat looks at me as if to say "don't like your present then?"

We moved up North from Down South a few years ago. After moving the stuff we returned out lorries and myself and partner picked up the cat and started the drive up north, again. My step-son decided to let the cat out of the box which was fine as she just sat on his knee. Worked well till the motorway did a fast stop. I'm told he yelled quite loudly as the cats traction control kicked in yes

Cat ducked everytime they went passed a lorry though...

And risk arrest and jail.....

To the OP, you need a nice steel framed cat basket, as we have.... Once they are in and the latch is on, they are not getting back out (though one cat did engage on a fairly determined chewing session resulting in the bar getting slightly damaged)...

The OP has replaced the terrors with 2 more (well it was 6 years ago!) who each have their own wicker basket. (alas previous mogs are no more - one got run over (took several attempts) and the other disappeared).

They have yet to escape those, but don't seem too bothered by the trip to the vets.

It's more the expensive 'chip reading' cat flap we're trying to train them to use that's now causing gripes.

for those of us who've had the misfortune of having to take a cat to the vet it's reassuring that others are suffering too

Don't. Do. It.
Fur shed everywhere. Wrecked furniture. Regular vet visits (see OP). No gratitude when you feed them (unlike a dog).

Do yourself - and your neighbours - a favour and get a hamster instead.
