Instead of a playpen which he can try to jump out of, get a dog crate. We got one when Louis broke bones in his paw a couple of years ago & meant he could go out on the lawn as well as being kept in the house.

Wow, any idea what happened?
Sherlock is a very handsome chap and a very lucky boy as well.
No idea. He came in through the cat flap like that and didn't complain. Took us a couple of moments to notice as it was covered by fur. Sherlock is a very handsome chap and a very lucky boy as well.
And yes, a lucky boy. The vet didn't think he would make it and laid the groundwork for a difficult call from theatre.
My theory is a fall onto something sharp, perhaps falling through a greenhouse (not ours - we've already checked).
We don't think it was an RTA - no other injuries.
A strange one. I did wonder if someone slashed him but that seems too odd.
We're a bit cursed at the moment. The dog ran under a van and shattered the bones in a foreleg a week ago. He was lucky to keep the leg - 12 weeks with external fixation. £5.5k of vet bills in a week (not insured). Tough few days.

The playpen was there for the dog to recover in. We had put a cardboard box on top to keep him contained but there was a small gap at one end and Sherlock decided that was his route out. I was amazed. The vet had said all his abdominal muscles had been cut so he would find moving painful - a three foot jump was not what I expected. A larger piece of cardboard is in now place and it is weighted down. Something like these: http://www.thesportshq.com/confidence-pet-dog-crat...
We had to improvise to get him home.
We dopn't know what happened to Minnie when she lost her leg. Just came home with it in a mess! No Car injuries. Much worse news is that a Big White Cat ran out in front on my car on the way into the village last night and I ran it over. Not pleasant and he seemed to have been killed straight away. It had the look of one of our local favorites Paddy so we are waiting to see if Paddy turns up looking for biscuits

Looks chuffed to have his cone on!
He managed to get it off shortly after that picture. We tried to put it back on. I'm still nursing the wounds (he's the most docile cat I've ever known). He got it off again. It's sitting on the side. Luckily, he's not worrying at the wound. My wife for some reason is not keen. She decided to put him in a babygrow instead (legs cut off buttoned up the back) so he couldn't get to the wound. .
I said I wouldn't do that but would be delighted to film it for the inevitable sh!ts and giggles.
I got THAT look.
I helped.
Amazingly we got him in it with no trouble. It took him less than a minute to escape. We tried to repeat. More wounds. That's on the side next to the Elizabethan collar.

Poor Sherlock, that is a crazy nasty looking scar!
Is there a cat video thread? If not, this short vid literally had me in tears (good kind):

Looking at his cone of shame, how does it secure, velcro? All the ones we've used have been press studs, and there have been no escapes from those...including when one tried to run under the bed and was brought up short with a resounding 'THUNK' as the cone hit the side of the bed.gwm said:

So I was in Europe today on business. I asked about Sherlock. The wife left him in the pen overnight - roof on, weighted down with four cushions. The route to the cat flap was open for the other cat to come and go. Wife came down in the morning to find the roof off the pen, and the cat gone. Four hours later, he returned looking smug.
