I'm sorry Jess but despite your innocent look, the evidence suggests it was you!

a slightly belated 'goodbye' to Sasha:

A week ago I got that horrible phonecall from the vet that they had identified him from his chip. Run over earlier that evening. weeping

I know we all think ours are the best, but he was an exceptional cat: the most talkative, attentive and sociable beast you could wish for. His darker side was a hunting rate I've never seen before: I suspect the local mouse population is bouncing back from his predations already!

Very sadly missed. Thankfully his sister seems to be adjusting after a couple of days of confusion of 'where is he?'

thank you and the others who have made similar comments, it is appreciated.

His sister seems to be doing well on adjusting, actually coming out of her shell a bit. She's spending most evenings on the sofa between us - something she used to have to compete with him for!

After a couple of months to see how she progresses and adapts; it is inevitable that we'll be looking for another companion (or two) for her/us.

Sorry to hear this frown

We're relocating back to the UK in the New Year and we know that our two 'indoor' apartment cats are going to have to get used to going outside. We're obviously worried they have zero Street Smarts and with cats being cats, they will soon find the small garden boring and will want to explore. I almost think it's going to be a case of when, not if, one of them goes missing or is knocked over.

Would it not be easier to keep them as house cats?

We got Sasha and Sveta a little over three years ago when we returned to the UK, we were closer to busy roads before we moved, so had hoped after moving a year or so ago that there would be less risk here. Fields to play in as well as gardens etc, but I guess curiousity and cats go hand in hand, so they explore and sadly he discovered he couldn't out run a car, or whatever it was.

Having said that I would tend to disagree regarding it being inevitable that they will go missing/get knocked over. Missing is more likely, at least temporarily as they get shut in sheds or garages, had that several times and got them home after. In around 25 years of cat ownership (or servitude?) Sasha is only the second we've lost to being knocked over, others have lived to 16 and 17. Good luck, but if you worried for them, perhaps as others have said; keep them as indoor cats.

Ansolutely

Keeping cats indoors is perfectly ok where circumstances (such as not wanting your cat to go missing or get run over) require it. As long as entertainment and ideally an enclosed outdoor area are provided then all will be well. When we had to do it we built a netting covered structure outside the french windows, and they would spend quite a bit of time out there.

Finally live somewhere cat friendly so after a while of visiting the local cats protection finally brought home a new overlord smile. Very timid cat but after a couple of weeks is settling in and getting used to us. Was obviously spoilt before and was a little overweight so is on a controlled diet at the moment.

Our two cats are indoor cats as they've never been outside having always lived at the rescue centre.

No doubt they'll be allowed out one day but they don't seem bothered. They've got plenty of toys for stimulation and entertainment.

Do you think it's okay with an old cat to keep it indoors? We had cats a few years ago and kept them indoors because of a neighbours dogs. I'm moving into a place by myself soon and thought of getting a cat to keep me company. I've looked on a couple of rescue websites and think an older cat who just wants peace and quiet would suit me as that's what I want too.
That is more than just okay.

Get one that is not used to life outside

Not if you make that garden interesting to them. Catify it if you will.

Look here for ideas. I don´t know if there is a similar website in English. But here you go click on the links. Photos say more than words anyway.
