The latest addition to our family arrived today, this is Milly.
She is 5 years old, ex-racehorse. She had an accident where she got stuck in a starting gate and needed surgery, so now won't race. And a racehorse that won't race is worthless, so we gave her a home before she got sent to the slaughterhouse. Joint venture between my wife and the lady who owns the livery yard, we got Milly at no cost but we will half the upkeep costs.
She has settled in very well today, seemed to not be bothered by the other horses and went straight into her stable when led in. The plan is get some meat on her and school her for dressage.
Millie has settled in great. Little things have been a challenge, like walking straight into her stable was new to her and she had never been brushed. But she has put some weight and condition on and is looking fantastic. Just had her shoes taken off last week and was measured for a saddle today, still quite a bit off being ridden yet though.She is 5 years old, ex-racehorse. The result was :-
Came 5th, his first placing and equals his highest ever racing place. Shame he bronced and tried to p!ss off on the first two movements.

Thanks for the comments, he can really move forward at home and out hacking but I just wasn't letting it out on just his second test otherwise he would have then run off.
I know the forward trot is there and every time we ride a competitive test I will let just a little more out.
Got emailed some pics today from the show organiser, sorry for the poor quality.
You can see he has really chunked/muscled up compared to the photo's of when I first had him and had to cover him up with a exercise sheet as he was so thin.

Rode our first indoor dressage test today at Oaklands College, St Albans.
Just rode the intro, he went well and coped with the indoor school but lost focus in the second half if the test listening to horses walking by on the outside of the school.
The result was 2nd place!
My wife with the connie came third.
My son rode the two prelims on the horse he competes on for the yard owner where he works Saturdays. He won one class and came second in the other. They were the last qualifiers for the Chiltern and Thames Rider summer championship so he is off next month for those finals.

Went over to Ireland with the wife and a few friends last week to visit Cavan sales. We were looking for a new horse for the wife but I bought these three:
The wee bay is a 6yo fairly novice 128cm pony and the grey is a Grade A showjumper, 9yo and again 128cm.
This lad is a full up 148cm Connemara 5yo gelding that's done a wee bit (he's got 25 Irish SJ points) and is for her indoors:
Plan is for our kids to get the two 128s out and about and find them nice homes to (hopefully) pay for all three! Very pleased with them all so far and the two wee ones have their first outing tomorrow.

I've started my 26 month old son off riding (his God Mummy has a riding school). He's is a total natural both around the horses and ponies and riding them. His balance is just awesome. He's had two rides, the second time he mounted (with a tiny bit of help) straight off the mounting block and picked the reins up in each hand and held them correctly. And all this from someone just turned two
Needless to say he's asked Santa for a pony........and a bike..............and a tractor

Well alot has happened in a few short weeks.
At the end of September out hacking in our village we wanted to turn right into a side road just before a blind left bend. My wife was behind with her arm out indicating right and a van overtook us as close as possible into the blind bend at as fast a speed as he could take the bend as close as possible to the horses. His hand was on the horn all the time he was going past us. My horse went into meltdown and has not even been close to being right on the road since. I reported it straight away to the Police but no contact from them since.
I have been using my neighbours stables but have my own grazing - my own stables were erected last Friday but whilst all the building work has gone on I haven't been able to ride in my school - so no schooling plus bad road riding has made life very difficult in the middle of winter with my ex-racer.
However we today paid a years subscription to a yard for park and ride which is 10 minutes trailer travel away from us that has excellent hacking with lots of good tracks and quiet quiet lanes. Rode for 1.75 hours with just 15 minutes of lanes - horse very excited but NOT put in dangerous situations.
So an awful couple of months but finally for the first time in my life I have my own stables, the horse will get better when I can get him into the school again and I have found a place to enjoy hacking. Bring on the summer of long light warm days - things can only get better.

I had similar happen to me on a friends 5yr old racer. Had always been very good in traffic, but one very quiet Sunday morning riding out down a very straight narrow country lane we met a car traveling at very high speed and didn't slow down. Even though I was up on the grass verge, I ended up on my back in the middle of the road. Thankfully the mare didn't bolt and a farmer in the neighbouring field feeding his sheep came and helped me back on.
The woman in the car eventually stopped some distance down the road and came back. She didn't apologise, just said she was from the city and didn't understand the rural country way of life. The farmer had some choice words for her.
I managed to ride back in terrible pain, thankfully we didn't see any traffic and it transpired I'd fractured a vertebrae. The horse never did recover from this incident and was a nightmare with traffic when out on her own.

Meet Charlie...... The wifes 50th birthday present
We've had him almost a year, and he's now 5 years old..... He's a thoroughbred Clydsdale.... 750kg of pure pulling power..
We've just last week moved him from livery to a lovely 4 acre field that we've managed to secure for long term rent.... He's a happy boy..
And here's his posh new shelter..

Cheers...... Well I can't tell you a lot really....he's the wifes passion, I just pick up the tabI'd love a Clydesdale some day.
....I know next to nothing about horses, but what I can tell you, is that as far as I can tell, he has a lovely calm nature, nothing much bothers him, and he's very mellow...(although he can have his moments)... To me he looks like a horse should do, heavy and powerful.... The Mrs rides him a lot, she hacks out over the moors, rides on the lanes and he just does what she asks...
He seems really happy in his new field...(he was spending to much time inside at the livery)... And even though the weather is cold, he much prefers to be outside than in his shelter... The field next to his has 2 other heavy horses and they all seem to get along fine....... Oh and his shoes have to be specially made and cost a bloody fortune...
