....I know next to nothing about horses, but what I can tell you, is that as far as I can tell, he has a lovely calm nature, nothing much bothers him, and he's very mellow...(although he can have his moments)... To me he looks like a horse should do, heavy and powerful.... The Mrs rides him a lot, she hacks out over the moors, rides on the lanes and he just does what she asks...
He seems really happy in his new field...(he was spending to much time inside at the livery)... And even though the weather is cold, he much prefers to be outside than in his shelter... The field next to his has 2 other heavy horses and they all seem to get along fine....... Oh and his shoes have to be specially made and cost a bloody fortune...
As for the shoes, Our ferrier told us how much a set are....yeah! I'd rather not know tbh

So, now that we're nearing the better spring weather, what's everyone's plans with their horses this year?
I'm yet to make my mind up whether I can be arsed going and doing a bit of Eventing or just stick to the showjumping, but with regards to the kids we are definitely hoping to 'broaden their horizons' somewhat and do a bit more Pony Club, some cross country etc.

Doing the 'charity' cross country at RAF Halton in a few weeks which is usually a fairly amusing 'no brakes' affair. Hopefully will do a bit of showjumping this year too, but nothing too serious. The missus has been talking about modern pentathlon too which could be a laugh....except the running bit!

Yes, it's a brilliant pic isn't it? I found her in a dealer's yard, she 19yo, was in a lovely Pony Club home for 6 or 7 years up until last year. She needs a little TLC to get some condition and topline on her but she'll be brilliant for my oldest (11yo) boy. People write these older ponies off but they have so much left to give and vast amounts of experience. as long as you dont get an evil one (and lets face it, there are some properly evil ponies!) i totally agree with you. I see them regularly outperforming miles more expensive horses in competition...and then loading quietly at the end! and theyre so much smarter usually. thats such a tidy jump.....beautiful form!Good luck at the XC, I'm sure it'll be a blast - brakes are for wimps, right?
brakes are definitely for wimps....its just our boy currently outweighs Y2blades gorgeous new Clydesdale by 20Kg but can also clear 8 foot from standing and hit a flat out gallop in 3 strides....and is 7 and easily distracted by everything in the world..Im a little nervous!

Ideal opportunity for an update...
We measured Charlie recently and he's just over 17 hands.... Weight is around 780kg
He's done a few dressage comps now, + general schooling, riding to music and a fun ride, and he's coming along very nicely.......
And even I got to have a ride on him so it shows how patient he is

Wow, it's ages since we've updated this thread.
A lot has happened this year for me and my son (relationship split with his Dad and having to move, which has hit him hard). The new area & village though led us to doing a pony share and I've been teaching him to ride. To say he's taken to it like a duck to water is an understatement. Here he is riding his Lulu, this is August on his 3rd birthday - note the natural seat and heels down already.
A lot has happened this year for me and my son (relationship split with his Dad and having to move, which has hit him hard). our boy is bloody terrified of sheep for some reason...its damn funny (he tries to somehow retract his legs and go all small and scuttle away when he sees them - pretty disconcerting when riding) gigantic pussy of an animal!

- I'd rather handle half a dozen draughts than a single Welsh Section A! 
As for sheep, there are about 1000 here on the farm, so they have to get on, and they are reasonably tolerant of neighbours' cattle too, but they are really not keen on pigs...
