I added wood when i first got my tank and even though i soaked it for week before hand it still produces tannins and turns the water yellow, i do a 30% water change every week and it keeps it under control. Try adding charcoal to your filter system, that helps.

What he said^^^^

I have quiet a bit of bog wood in mine, as said above I soaked it for ages (about 4 weeks, refreshing the water it was soaking in every few days).

Also I'm Currently toying with setting up a Malawi Cichlid Community, in a second 48" tank.

Seachem purigen, add 100ml in the correct bag to your filter and within a few hours your water will be crystal clear, it lasts 4 to 6 months but can be renewed with a bleach soak. If you get it either buy it bagged or spend the money seachem want for their bag. I tried it in the smallest holed filter bag at the shop and it just fell through the holes.

We have a small 60 litre frameless cube I originally bought as a hospital tank but which I've been meaning to rebuild as a planted tank for a while. Finally got round to it last week - got hold of a very small pressurised CO2 system and a 24W compact t5 luminaire.

I've planted with java fern and crypt trimmings from the other planted tank, and will probably leave it at that. Current inhabitants are amano shrimp and kuhli loach. Next additions will be Asian glass catfish and then finally something a bit more active and mid-water orientated.

Very neat cool

Anybody have an pictures of a cichlid tank? I'm thinking of uprading to a 180-250l tank max. I think I will prefer to stick with tropical but this time with cichlids. Can anybody tell me pro's cons with them and any past experiances?
Tom
I have recently changed my set-up to Lake Malawi Cichlids.

What sort of Cichlids do you have in mind?

Nice fighter, something i've never kept.

Wouldn't mind setting up a betta tank sometime.

free convict I rescued from being sent down the toilet, I had a spare tank incase he didnt get on with the malawi's but he seems to be settling in well, helps that hes about the biggest in the tank

My Betta name foo, very happy in his tank with some Minnows, probably going to be selling the tank with the fish to feed my cichlid addiction but only if it goes to a good home.

A bit more hide and seek, unsure of what this one is

Great pics of your Malawis. How long have you been keeping them?
I've had my Malawis for about a month now.... Fantastic fish, such great characters.

2 weeks and 2 days lol I have been wanting them ever since I got into a fish a few months back now but started with the small tank with some danio's, minnows then the fighter (removed the danios then too)

this then came up on ebay complete with fish, stand, ocean rock and lava rock and made a cheeky offer and collected it the same night. only problem was he lived at the top of a block of flats so was fun carting all the water and tank down the stairs! hehe

couple more pics:

A rather scared looking fish!

lol yeah I bet that was interesting getting those from up there.

Good looking fish you have there...yellow lab, Blue Johani, Johani hybrid and Rusty.
I have given up trying to take photos of my lot hehe they are nosy as feck UNTIL you get the camera put.

I have a little video clip of them on my iPhone though.
MissB chose the decor, the fish love it.

nice choice of fish you have there hehe I love the rusty (i'm guessing thats the purpley/bluish one with yellow belly and fins), very understated and the yellowing has come on so much after the initial stress of moving the tank. lovely looking tank you got there!
