Vets bills are apparently hundreds and hundreds for even something fairly simple these days, our breeder said it had rocketed in the last 5 years.
What vet do you use? Most of our vet bills are well below the £60 or £70 excess that insurance companies want. The dearest bill we've had has been £450 when our cat got run over and ended up with a broken pelvis, I will admit that had he needed an operation it would have cost us about £3K although I'm not sure I'd have paid that much or if any insurance co. would. So by self insuring we have still saved thousands of pounds over the years with all the dogs and cats we've had and if you can afford the occasional hefty bill it's probably cheaper in the long run to self insure.

It is a top idea, but its not nearly enough.
I realise if they ever need anything major then we'll have to stump up, but at least we'll have a contribution to it. They're 2.5 now so that's £450 they've got in the kitty (no pun intended smile).

Our cat cost the insurance company £4.5k a few years ago due to complications post road traffic accident. Your idea can work but it can just be a drop in the ocean!

Any other thumbs ups? between the two of them they managed to tear down the front door curtain at 2am and have taken to doing a balancing act on top of the kitchen door...crazy kits indeed.

If you are going to insure you need to make sure you get a whole of life type policy, the others are fine for accidents but will stop paying out after a year\policy renewal for any ongoing illness\condition your cat may develop which you will then have to pick up the bill for. A friends dog was diagnosed as diabetic amongst many other things and the insurers had to pick up a bill of 3.5K a year for several years to keep him going. They however had to collect his piss every morning to test it, so I think the insurers got the better end of the deal!!
