We stayed at the hotel jazz near las ramblas. Was nice with a pool on the roof.

As much as I love Barca, remember it's pickpocket central....

Hotel 1898 about 2 mins from the market is very nice ... the suites have rooftop patios and some have a private plunge pool. The hotel also has two pools, one spa pool underground and a rooftop one ... great spot as well

cheers
Been going to Barceleona for 15 years usually 3/4 times each year. The 1898 is super as is the Majestic, an old established high end hotel. It's on Passeig de Gracia nr a tube stop and brilliantly located. Between the Majestic and 1898 and slightly less expensive is the Olivia, very minimalist overlooking Placa Catalunya so there's nowhere more central. Tip: good as 4/5 star hotels are, the Hotel Jazz which I think is a 3 star offers everything you could want in a good location between Placa Catalunya and the University. See www.Tripadvisor.co.uk for other ideas.

My mates and I have booked into the Soho hotel in the Eixample area, which we are led to believe is fairly central.

The hotel has got very good reviews on all the sites we looked on and came out a reasonable £80 a night b&b per room.

Not going till Jan, so can't offer actual experiences, but everything we've read has largely been positive about it.

Eixample is where I live and has a lot of very good restaurants. It´s central in the city, and you can walk to most places or find an easy metro very cheaply. Try carrer Enric Granados for good places to eat (Habaluc is good) I think the Soho hotel is on Gran Via which is only a 10 min walk from Universitat, so central enough to walk and far enough away from Las Ramblas to sleep

So booked last night, wife chose Hotel Torre Catalunya, not sure if it's the same as someone mentioned earlier, similar name. I think the Spa swung it for her.

Should be ok for a bit of Autumn sun, flying sleazyjet there though so that'll be an experience!

There for 3 nights from the 23rd.

Jiffle King,or others, any recommendations for meals out?

Are you in the Torre Catalyuna or the Gran Torre Catalunya? they are in different places.

As for restaurants, difficult to say, but I´ll consult the oracle (the secretary who has a list) and will try to come back. (Habaluc is good, Flamant was great, Fillete Russo for great bravas and posh burger - both on Enric Granados)

Went to a great tapas place on Saturday, will find out what it was called. I don´t recommend anything by Las Ramblas, not because they are poor (although many are) but they are aimed at tourists and watch out for your bag.

Cheers, we are in the Torre Catalyuna, seems nice enough.

Will note down the eateries, thanks. Will have to do a Tapas one at least once, wife love that.

Unless you are going outside of Barcelona a lot, then I don't see any point in a hire car. It's less than €30 in a taxi to any area where there is a hotel and getting the train is quite easy if you land at T2 (easyjet)and you can buy a 10 journey ticket for €8 which all of you can use (pass it backwards) It's also quite expensive to park in BCN (€25 a day) and the metro is so cheap and good that I would not get one.
I've been to Barcelona 4 times in recent years, twice each for business and pleasure. Every time got seriously ripped off by taxis - one even tried to rip us off when we had a local guy in the taxi back to airport on one trip. My wife wants to go again and I've said no.

2 places to keep your valuables safe... metro's/trains and Las Ramblas. There are countless tales of people having a wallet/purse taken, watch out for women with a jumper over their arm and a bag underneath it (on the metro and at the airport) and no wallets in back pockets.. and when in a restaurant, hook your bag onto you or the table (I sound paranoid, but they target English drunk people and it's just sensible)
I've never had any touble in this regard, but tales of people who have are legion, and it made me edgy the whole time. An employee of the firm we work with there had his briefcase snatched (nothing subtle about it) by a gang as he got to the top of Las Ramblas, and he's a big bloke.

Very surprised on the taxi point you make as they are all metered and normally very good at going the quickest way. Agree that many people get pickpocketed, very few muggings here though and nearly all of the issues are on or around Las Ramblas or the metro. I guess the same problem exists in many cities, but BCN is bad for this. At weekends if going anywhere near Las Ramblas, I don´t take the phone and take all unnecessary cards out of the wallet.

I gather the issue with taxis in Barcelona (which may apply elsewhere but I haven't experienced it) is that the fares have a supplements and multipliers depending on where you're going and what day it is etc, and that makes it very difficult to figure out (and argue) whether you're being ripped off or not.

Must admit I'm apprehensive about the whole pickpocketing thing as we were planning on using the Metro to get around and will be going partying each evening so will certainly be wondering around whilst drunk.

On the subject of places to eat, all members of our party can't really afford to spend £40 quid per head on meals. Are there any good chains over there in the mould of the likes of GBK, Pizza Express, Nandos etc?

Not very PH I know, but it's only meant to be a cheap (though I appreciate this is relative with Barca) winter break.

Yes... went to Pizza Express on our first day when we went (due to being starving and 'trapped' in Las Ramblas where every other menu turned out to be a con)... Had a lovely bottle of wine and pizza for very little!

That said, try and have at least one Spanish/ Catalan experience... You don't have to spend loads - took up The Jiffle King's recommendation of Enric de Granados a couple of years ago and ate in some fantastic restaurants! smile
