Nice place?

Me and the current GF looking at a couple of nights in Bath for February and just wondering what the general consensus on the place was.

Decent restaurants? Bars? Things to do? We like museums and such.

Also, hotels, does anyone have any specific recommendations? Preferably no more than a £100 a night. So far the Best Western Abbey is looking favourable in terms of a compromise between cleanliness/price/location.

Thanks in advance.

The Hole In The Wall Restaurant had a very good reputation (I haven't been for a number of years):

Hopefully a fellow PHer can confirm/contribute?

Bath is lovely, and February is a good time to go as the grim tourist season won't have got going. What's the budget for hotel?

Stuff to do:

Royal Cresent & Circus
Holborn Museum
Roman Baths
Tea in the Pump Room
Punting up to Bathampton
Lots of great independent shops

But I hope you aren't looking for a banging nightlife!

Thanks chaps.

Not bothered about the nightlife really. Would rather drink a nice bottle of vino back at the room after a meal than go clubbing.

Sorry I missed your budget in the OP. Just round the corner from the Best Western Abbey (which I don't rate to be honest) is my good friend Derek's guest house, Three Abbey Green, directly opposite the rather decent Crystal Palace pub.

Definitely worth a look.

Tons to do, I work right in the centre and there's plenty of choice of eateries, pubs, tourist stuff etc. Best bit is you can do most of it on foot but take a trip on the tour bus and maybe join a walking tour for a bit of fun.

Stay smack bang in the centre (Abbey is fine) and have fun!

Bath is lovely.... Great for just strolling around. I had my best ever cappuccino down one of the side streets in a little family run Italian.

Go to Woods restaurant on Alfred Street (opposite the Assembly Rooms). I was there recently and it was excellent - bistro type place, very relaxed and excellent food. You'll probably need to book - the stroll up there takes you past some interesting little antique shops.

I seem to recall struggling to park anywhere!

Another vote for the Holburne Museum - I'm going on Saturday to see the Field of Light installation.

If you're in town on Saturday morning, the Green Park farmers' market is a thousand times better than the Christmas market by the Abbey.

Ah, thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten that was on. Really keen to see it.

Loads of pubs and restaurants in Bath. A favourite combo of mine is to start in The Griffin (you could even stay there!) with a good selection of local beers and friendly staff then just round the corner to The Beaujolais for great French food and wine.

Hey does anyone else have anything to add? I'm looking at doing the same as the OP for this weekend but wondering if Bath will be any good if it's raining and outdoor activities are severely limited!

All in my opinion obviously...however..

To eat: The Hudson, the best steak in bath (i'd choose to eat here over pretty much anywhere in Bath) or the Beaujolais,(run by this quirky French guy known as JP, can be a great evening) thirdly The Circus resturant is very nice too.

Drink: Hall and Woodhouse if you don't mind it busy, Central Wine bar, or the Salamander (if you like a proper pub)

Stay, depending on budget somewhere just of the beaten track (the centre can become akin to a war zone on a Sat Evening) somewhere on great pultney street, maybe the Dukes hotel....

Have a good time!

Exciting? It'd get banned. wink

Holbourne Museum is good, if only to look at the naff tat Mr. Holbourne collected. He had a lot of money, and a lot less taste.

The Roman Baths is good for a wet day, although pricey.

Then there's the Abbey, the Museum of Costume, The American Museum (A little out of town but well worth a visit), and the inevitable bus tour of the pretty buildings.

If all else fails, the Little Theatre cinema has odd films on most days, and sells beer.

Bath in the rain just like anywhere else but it's so small, easy to get around and dodge the weather!

Could add the Building of Bath museum followed by a wander around 1 Royal Crescent, you'll pass through Circus and Brock Street doing that and Margarets Buildings is a nice traffic free stop off for coffee.

Big junior rugby festival on at the Rec on Sunday so will be plenty of people about down there.
