Hi Wedding anniversary coming up and as it's on a Friday I thought myself and Mrs O would go away for the night. We live near Cirencester (so the Cotswolds are out ) and am looking for - Either B&B/Hotel in a town/village within walking distance of bars/restaurants - 2-3 hours max. from where we live...with preferably a nice drive or somewhere intersting to visit en route - Sensible price (well...it's not a BIG anniversary ) Previously have been to Brecon, Lynton/Lynmouth, Blenheim Palace (forget where we stayed), New Forest, Malvern and stayed so perhaps somewhere new to us might be good ta

However, you have Cardiff Castle, Castell Coch and Caerphilly Castle all within easy distance and the town centre is worth seeing. She'll probably also want to visit the nearby Dick Lovett showroom wih Ferraris and Porsches and Stratstone on North Rd with Astons and Lotus.

Nice one tbh we've been in the centre before and know it well (sightseeing and numerous rugby matches). I am Welsh - born in Caerphilly and lived in Bedwas and then move to Barry at the age of 14 - she is a Saes...but she's not all that bad Just fancy the Bay as I have not been there since I was a nipper to go and look at the ships! I'm guessing it's a bit nicer and safer than it was then

No ships there now bar the lighthouse ship, all marina boats though they do boat trips and a fast dinghy.
Just don't forget that if there is any chance of rain, we get it! I'm looking out from Greyfriars Road over the Bay and it looks grey and cloudy at present but not currently raining.
Your best way down there these days is via the M4-Ely-Bay link road. Cardiff has sprouted much bus laneage and lousy traffic congestion through the centre.
I live in Caerphilly myself. Improving that has been a slower process.

Nit too worried about the weather tbh...wet on the outside so get wet on the inside Ah Caerphilly: Used to do a bit of fishing in the castle moat when I was a nipper (no licence so used to dodge the licence bloke) - bought fishing tackle from Woolies on the main street there; went to the Castle cinema (very occasionally) as a kid and my mam was in the crowd trying to outsing the Pistols when they played there in the 70's; had hair cuts and went to the dentist there; and food shopping out of town in what was the first (and only?) Carrefour opened in the UK (I am ready to be corrected on whether it was the first or only, but that was my memory) Long time ago now... ....getting old!

Funnily enough, I watched Episode 3 of "The 70s" last night and the Pistols concert in Caerphilly was featured quite heavily.
Carrefour is now Asda. They have tidied up the Mountain and are currently building a lovely stone wall that must be costing them a few quid. The old burger bar on the Mountain is now a permanent building though I've yet to try it.
It will be good to come back and see the changes - not all for the good.

It was in a right state when I left in 1980? I might nip over to Barry Island as well!! I worked 4 or 5 summers over there for the local council on the deck chairs, car park etc. It looked quite nice compared to how it used to be, on Gavin and Stacey

One of the castle towers has been cleaned. It's a start. Barry Island is quite nice now - clean beach and housing where Butlitz used to glower. Barry has changed a lot too. I used to sell motorbikes there in 1980 and it's pretty different along the docks development area now.
