Possibly going for a 4 night visit in late September. It's a friends 50th and there's a varied group of guests. Some singles but mostly couples. I think the birthday boy will have the evenings sorted out, but can anyone suggest good places to stay, any tips or "avoids", suggestions of things to visit and do in the day time? Thanks.

No problems!
Just watch out for the team of rugby-playing ex-SAS guys getting frightened by the 5-foot tall, 7 stone when wringing wet, touts in the square.
You have to follow one of the links as there's an interesting 'spat' buried in one where some chap that posted (when pissed I think) started getting his knickers in a twist with me. T'was very funny at the time!

Meant also to say, if you want any direct advice, PM me. I've been very many times and know the place very well.

az\ had ham said: Read these. 'had ham' seems to have the place nailed - ie. I agree with what he says Take a big suitcase. The souks are difficult to resist, and things like Moroccan leather slippers, bags and pouffes make great Christmas presents. Avoid any offers to post stuff to the UK, if you want to receive the item you paid for, that is. Plus there's really no need anyway. Airport check-in staff in Morocco are far less anal about hand luggage than they are in the UK. If it will fit in the overhead locker, you can take it on the plane.

Great advice, especially if you use Royal Air Maroc (nee Atlas Blue).
Baggage allowance is nothing more than a loose-ish guide at Menara, but be careful if you buy fragile things - you need to wrap it very well to avoid fragmentation at 33,000ft. Most of the very pretty painted earthen-ware and pottery is un-fired and therefore far, far more susceptible to damage. You really cannot ever have enough bubble wrap or newspaper...

Oh, and leave space for what you'll buy at the 'Matero' shop at Marrakech Menara airport.
You will be tempted by the stylish wares on sale: herbal teas, orange / rose flower toiletries, ghassoul noir (a black clay for washing), and scented candles - all beautifully packaged.
Morocco with a modern twist.

In Marrakech at the moment. It's an amazing place. The Souks are a real experience - they get better (and easier) the more times you visit them. Amazing city

If you are a bit lost, DON'T let a random punter "show you the way" to where you are trying to go. There is a big problem with unofficial tour guides.
My Wife and I had one of these bozos do it to us when we were already lost and we ended up following him down loads of scary back streets where he started demanding money for "helping us". I was worried as we had about £25k worth of jewellery/watches/cameras with us. The guy was a menace. We had to jump in a taxi to get away from him.

Yep yep - if you ever get lost either ask a local woman or shop keeper for directions. The locals are always ready to show you the way, even if you don't need them to. All you have to do is be polite but firm and say "no thanks, I'm fine"

Please don't leave England again, it's embarassing.

Actually, sod you guys! I'm taking my TVR (plus nice watch, camera, Wife's diamonds) on my next holiday through 6 countries this year - Sorry ham-pants! x
