As a local I'd recommend either just getting the yellow cab or booking through dial7. My preference is dial7 though as if you land 5 PM Friday you will be spending a couple of hours with the driver.

JFK may be close to NYC geographically but it's a pain. I almost always go through Newark but I do live on the NJ side of the river

Just don't do what I did.

Flew into Newark at 11pm and by the time we'd collected bags it was gone midnight. A 45 minute wait at the subway station, followed by a realisation the train wasn't heading for the station I'd planned due to track maintenance. There followed a 3/4 mile walk to find the hotel dragging our cases and hand luggage around New York at 2am whilst fending off the vagrants asking for cigarettes.

I saved about $30 and got no end of grief from the Mrs. I quite liked the adventure! biggrin

That depends on where you are staying. I asked the Hotel I am staying at and they wanted $236. I said I would get a cab

Alot of people recommend this lot http://www.dial7.com
Beat me to it! I've used them many times and highly recommend them. Cheaper than a taxi and you'll be riding in a clean Lincoln Town Car vs a rattling taxi. For less.

Edit: h0b0 is dead right about Newark. JFK is a real pain in the ass and even though it's in NY City, Newark is actually closer. Of course, I live in Englewood so Newark is a LOT more convenient for me.

Just a wee update. Used dial7 for a car from the airport. There is a freephone when you get thru customs. They ask for a brief description of you and tell you where to wait and what car number to look out for. Had a quick easy trip to the hotel.

When returning I just used a yellow cab. $50 fixed rate (just gone up from $45). Another easy quick trip.

For goodness sake if you go to NY go to Ellen's Stardust Diner - 1650 Broadway. Just fab. Google it! It's popular so go early.
