Amsterdam - where to stay?

Hi all, planning on going to Amsterdam last week of November for a few nights with my mate. We're looking to pay around £45 p/night. Not overly keen on hostels/room share, but just somewhere to get out heads down for the night in relative comfort.

Anyone have any suggestions/ places to check out?

Just booked exchange Amsterdam for 4nights, the hotel rooms are designed by fashion students so a little quirky. Good central location, rave reviews and less than 5mins from the train station.

All flights booked, decent time flights circa £240 all in, inc 20kg baggage & 3* room (mon-fri). Not bad I don't think. Worth a look if any PH'ers fancy a winter city break.

I used the "Chic and Basic" hotel for an IBC trip. It was fine and a good central but quiet location.

I've been warned by a friend on no accounts to even consider the Boatel (Botel? unsure of the spelling). It was moored right next to the red light district. He said he didn't want to think about the state of the mattress...

No, the Chic and Basic was fine. Clean and far more character than the Ibis. Not much in the way of dining facilities but in central Amsterdam who cares?

We usually go over for Queen's Day at the end of April and always stay at Chic & Basic. Find it ideally located for wandering to some of the best bars, and a peaceful place to escape back to.

I'm heading out there with a few mates in mid-Nov, we were originally looking at apartments as cost wise they didn't work out too bad split between all of us. But after a lot of looking and talking we decided on a hostel that is pretty central, Think it's working out to be £20-25 a night for a room to ourselves that has its own bathroom.
We figured that we aren't going to be in the room for long, it's just somewhere to pass out and regroup so might as well save the money for beer and stuff.

+1 stayed there since the early days of being "The new Amsterdam Hotel" Staff are great and accomodating and the rooms are clean and smart

I think I used a random place from the Rough Guide.

Was above an Irish pub that did a special deal on spare ribs. Room was comfortable and clean, even had a telly.

Will try to find the details and post up.
