Does anyone actually get stopped at customs, every time I go through is deserted. I normally go overseas 2-3 times a year and always pack 2000 cigarettes I'm my bags, never been a problem.

How much space does 4,000 cigarattes take up? I'm thinking that must be an entire large suitcase.

Regardless of the legalities, it hardly sounds like you fancy picking up a few cheap ciggies because you have a space for a packet or two.

It does sound rather pre-planned.

I have been stopped and searched a quite a few times, but I put that down from coming back from South America carrying pouches of tobacco in my bags for the inlaws - they do look very suspect when X-rayed?

800 is indeed the limit. If you are carrying any more than this they can all be confiscated. They may not be, but that is down to the discretion of the individual Officer

There is no limit on goods bought with taxes paid within the EU.
