Must do things in China?

My lasting memory of Shanghai was my final night there.
Stumbling home from a drinking pit in a state of advanced refreshment and looking for a cab, my eye was caught by a Carrera GT, sitting under lights in the Porsche showroom.
It's probably 3am, and I stand there drunkenly drooling over this supercar through the window. A 6 year old street kid with no shoes and a thin t-shirt is begging for money in the next doorway. Painfully skinny, filthy, obviously freezing.
I gave him pretty much everything I had. And walked home stone cold sober.
It is a city (and indeed a country) of extreme contrasts.

You don't have to go too far outside of the cities to see a totally different country.
Tried China Southern and Ctrip. Both coming out the same as Skyscanner. Short notice flights do seem to be cheaper than booking for March, but I don't know if this is a seasonal thing or not. Still coming in at £120 one way Beijing to Sanya though.
That Buddha looks worth a visit, while my gf is stuck in a classroom.

In Shanghai I can recommend the bullet train to the airport. Well worth the money even if you have to go out of your way to see it.
Qingdao was very nice on the east coast between Beijing and Shanghai.
When you say playing with Pandas in Chengdu, what does this mean?
Guilin is northwest of Hong Kong and was the place that felt most like a backpacker's mecca to me. http://wikitravel.org/en/Guilin
I booked my flights on elong.com

I think it depends on the time of day. I was there last week as well, and on the journey from the airport it was going top speed, this was about 11am.
On our return, which was before 9am it was "only" doing 301kph.

further to getting bullet train out to shanghai airport, make sure you get the maglev train (halfway!) back in to town. edit- i see this has already been mentioned
even though some distances do look big, it can be quite good taking the bullet trains between some of the big cities anyway.
communist propoganda museum in shanghai is quite fun. if chengu is too far, shanghai zoo had lots of panda when i was there ( as well as performing bears and tigers, so beware if you dont like that kinda thing)
guilin is gorgeous and recommended.
if you have time/ inclination, get out of big cities and go see some of the more rural areas and see some of the "real" china that the majority of the population experience.
get used to having your photo taken a lot too
