hehe

We're going to Morzine in the end, looks like there should be enough snow and we decided that since we're only going for 4 days, the short transfer time won the argument.

For some reason which I can't explain, Morzine and the surrounding areas have never been my favourite destination but hey, it's time off work, there's snow, and we won't get bloody Slade rammed down our necks on 24x7 loop!

With Fairytale of New York, those are the two of the things I love about Christmas!

Agree about Morzine & Avoriaz, not my favourite resorts, but I went 2 years ago for four days before Christmas and there was loads of lovely snow. I had a great time over the Chatel way which suited my pootling, cruising style with a touch of off-piste and some really nice traditional mountain cafes to warm up in. It was proper, nuts off freezing though, so take lots of layers!

Nicely done mate

I keep looking and seeing all the snow coming down all over the alps is making the sale of the car seem like the perfect excuse to disapeer off for a week or so on the slopes, will have to see if the OH will give me the pass as she is a teacher, so cant really just disapeer for a week when she likes!

If you're looking for decent pre Xmas skiing that is cheap have a look at staying in Le Chable which is in the valley below Verbier. The Gondola system actually starts at Le Chable so you just get on the Lift system there. All the skiing is above 2000m which is what you need at this time of year. Le Chable is also on the train line from Geneva airport so cheap and very, very easy transfer too.

Other cheap places to stay that connect in are La Tzoumaz and Nendaz.

Cheers for the heads up Cheib, will have a hunt around after the weekend and I know the car is sold, new one bought and cash is in my grubby little mits!

Have been looking at Jasna in Slovakia aswell (follow someone from there) and they haveno snow yet on the lower ground, but have had a whole raft of lifts and gondoas fitted this summer opening the area right up. Can do accomodation for a week for £99, but its the flights / transferes / passes that bump it up, booze is dirt cheap mind

Switzerland will not be cheap when you get there so maybe not the place for you. Restaurants on the mountain are stupid money but you can always buy food in the local super marker and go for the picnic option.

The skiing is superb though.

The Portes Du Soleil is a nice ski area, I've been a few times and stayed in Chatel but it is low which is a massive handicap at this time of year. From memory the highest skiing around Avoriaz is maybe 2500m....in Verbier the main ski area is 2200 m to 2700m with the higher stuff up to 3000m.

There's no need to book up now though....maybe just flights. I'd wait til the last minute there will be tons of availability.

Hi Cheib, thanks for the advise agaian. Deal on the cars all done, and now have a chunk of cash burning a hole in my pocket.

Have only been twice before, a long weekend in Mirebel year before last, and then 10 days early this year in Les Arcs, so the more info the better, especially for budget holidays.

time to get my shopping head on I think

I've never had a problem with snow cover in Avoriaz around Christmas, and I've been going every year for 20 years, so I wouldn't worry on that front. Plenty of snow there today.

Chamonix has loads of white stuff, nearly 2 feet in the town itself.
Les grands montets is partially open as is Les Houches.

Booked a week in Plage over crimbo, glad to get away from it all.

However any PH'ers fancy a trip to Scotland as they are due to get a dumpage this week.

Give us a heads up if you end up going to Jasna, I'm off there in Feb and it makes a change to find anyone else who has heard of it, let alone skied there....! A mate of ours has a Slovakian missus, so a few of us are going to give it a try, have heard really good things from her and it looks like they've certainly spent a fair bit of money on the place this year, hopefully its a bit of a hidden gem...

Second day today, had a fantastic day, I've skied my knackers off following the chalet host around. Conditions were near-perfect, fresh snow overnight and just a few degrees below zero to keep things fresh. Light was a little flat in places this afternoon but otherwise great. I honestly can't remember being this knackered after a day skiing - but in a very good way, and the hot tub when we got back helped me feel human once again!

I went to Jasna about 5 years ago. Snow was rubbish that year but don't let that put you off.

Beer was stupidly cheap back then. 20p for vodka and coke. You don't save money though as you simply drink \ buy more.

Have heard prices have gone up recently though, especially the lift pass.

There are no flights either from the UK now so I hear. So getting there is a ball ache.

Have fun!
