Depends what you want cover for:

Money back
Replacement ticket with other airline (which could be more expensive I booked at short notice)
Full cost of trip/holiday - ie including other expenses like hotels, car hire etc....

Travel Insurance before you book the flight.

Credit card will get you your money back, as long as the purchase is over £100.

Travel insurance may pay for new flights - depends on cover.

Where are you flying? What airlines are you looking at?

If you are looking at a major airline, most are pretty secure in my opinion:

Virgin
BA
Thai
Emirates
Etihad
Qatar
Cathay
AA
Delta

To name a few.

I definitely would not worry with either of those airlines.

Maxjet was under-funded and what seemed like a good idea with an all business airline, was never going to compete with the "Big Boys".
