They'll ask you to pay for the rental with that AmEx card.

Will you be pre-paying? I can't say for certain but would be amazed if they queried it when you collected the car. There must be hundreds, possiby thousands, of different kinds of discounts kicking around.

Are you going to the US, and how much is the discount? Hertz have had a 30% discount offer available to anybody for some time and it's only just finished. I imagine there will be another one soon.

One of the perks of me paying a hefty fee for my amex platinum is a generous discount at hertz, and a CDW code (no insurance required) to go with the hertz gold card/canopy service.
However, I am pretty sure that this has to be paid on an amex- I say pretty sure, as I dont really use anything else and as a result havent tried it with a visa, but I do recall it being mentioned at some point.

I suspect your code does too.
Remember that with gold canopy service someone still has to issue/check/approve the paperwork and put it in the car, so there is still a possibility it will be flagged up then even if it will accept another type of card for prepay, or another possibility is they charge you after the rental when they realise.

I concur - I rent cars via Hertz and National pretty much every week in the US.
Always pay AmEx - always get the discount. However last week at STL, found I'd left my AmEx card at home so they swiped my BoA debit card instead - this week, they hit me with an additional charge (only $38) because they can't apply and AmEx discount code to anything other than an AmEx charge card.

I think I was emailed it and it was on the Hertz website under the 'offers' tab - CDP758672 - but it's finished now.

When are you going? Always a bit of a gamble but there might be an end of year / new year sale.

I find the Hertz prices a bit random - they can vary each time you look. Have you checked how much it comes out at on Expedia, or through someone like USRentaCar (not sure if they do Hertz)?

On the subject of Hertz, you now get a choice of pay now ( usually more ! ) or pay at airport. Why more now online, and it seems to vary too !

Will be booking a car in Portugal soon for next summer, anyone got a valid code I could use?

I've never rented a car abroad before, do you just pay one fee and that includes insurance and everything?

No. The insurance is limited. You will need extra insurance. Try Insurance4carhire or similiar. I got hit by a passing car which destroyed my mirror. I was not in anyway at fault but Hertz billed me €500. You are liable 100% unless you take out the extra extra insurance.

follow that link i put on...they mention a delta code thats 10% off , then join quidco.com and click through thier link to hertz(after clearing your cookies) and they will give you 6-10% cashback

thats the best ive found unless anyone can provide a higher code

AFAIK Hertz have a new year sale and if you book through the Eu website you get the insurances thrown in.
