My observations from maybe 15 trips to the US (all west coast) is that they are some of the politest people I've met! Lots of pleases and generally say thank you for everything!
Ok, so its a bit fake - but I like it.
Oh, that doesnt include cab drivers. They get charged a different tax rate for using niceties I think.
I think this is true but I think the OP means when they are requesting services rather than offering them which I also have found them to be rude.Ok, so its a bit fake - but I like it.

I found people from around New York are pretty rude. Demanding might be a better word, they never ASK for things, they demand them.
Obviously if you're in a shop or restaurant the better trained fawn over you annoyingly, whilst others just act like you're wasting their chatting time by being in their establishment.
People on the West Coast (well, San Francisco area) are more polite. People in the sticks in New Hampshire were friendly, mostly quite genuinely it felt, but then the pace of life is slower than in the big cities.
I quite enjoy visiting the States, but I could never live there.

PS Whilst we're on the subject of rude nationalities on holiday (not Americans, particularly), throw Israelis in with the Russians and Saffers.
