Went to Carnival 2012

Found it very safe, we dressed down and didnt flash phones etc. Walked home from Leblan all the way to Copacabana one evening around 11pm , friends from different nationalities stayed all over including an Aussie couple in a hostel in a Favela and no issues. Mind you, they probably crackdown at Carnival as so lucrative.

Use your common sense, dont speak with a foreign accent loudly in dodgy areas and stay near as possible to Leblon/Ipanama which are the two nicer beaches, Copacabana cheaper and fine too. Keep expensive cameras hidden out of view when not in use etc

Enjoy, its a great place

Migx I was in Rio two years ago and have since made an effort to learn portuguese in time for the world cup.

As for accommodation try the Utropico Guest House, Casa Cool Beans or Casa Beleza.

was just curious about your choice.
just make sure you don't carry values with you.

I stayed at one of the Windsors, booked via a hotel comparison site orderd by user reviews and a Windsor gave the best price/review combination (Carnaval = silly price hikes).
