Standing around all day waiting to see the ball drop sounds like a massive ballache.... what else is worth doing?

Not sure how tough it would be to get a seat/ticket but " The View" which is a rotating bar/restaurant on top of the Marriot Marquis in Times Square could be a good place to hang out - fantastic views of the night skyline

But would imagine it's booked solid way in advance

If you have any sense whatsoever you'll give Times Square a wide berth. Seriously, it's not worth it. Thousands of people packed into a small area, no toilets, no booze allowed, and it'll be COLD.

Find a cool bar somewhere that plays your favourite music, tip the barman well early on, and just enjoy yourself with friends while staying warm in a cozy bar. Try and be within walking distance from wherever you're staying, as you won't be able to get a cab, and if you're pretty drunk you won't be arsed getting the subway either. Plus it gives you the chance to buy a couple of slices of pizza on the way home.

Personally, I'll be going out for a nice steak and a bottle of red, walking back up through Central Park and standing on the Great Lawn looking South at the Times Square fireworks with my wife, then walking home to bed.

we stood in central park, with a view right down 7th avenue towards time square. far less cramped, still a great atmosphere and perfect view of the fireworks. if you want to be in the middle of time square, you need to be there early!

From the Park? Pretty good, the are high enough to clear all the buildings in midtown so as long as you can find a spot that isn't obstructed by trees then you'll see everything. Plus it doesn't get busy at all, there might be a few other people doing the same.

Although Central Park has changed dramatically in the last 20 years, it can still attract the wrong sorts at night, so stick to the lit paths and try and hang out near other people, and don't wander too far off the supervised paths and roads.

Where are you staying?

Book a table at a nice restaurant or a table at a bar, and stay as far away from times square and the vicinity as possible, would be my advice as someone who has spent a lot of NYEs in new york.

Getting a cab in the early hours of nyd is, er, interesting. Subways run but very patchy, so be prepared for a wait or a walk.

Stayed there 2 nights and dined in the restaurant - well worth it.
