If you can't get a guaranteed model then Alamo/National let you choose your own car from the lot so if there is one, you can grab it.... it might mean waiting around the airport for a while though until one becomes available. Otherwise you can always ask the rental agent to give you a Mustang in preference, but if they don't have one then they can't help, no matter how much they'd like to.

Oh and there are some decent Hertz CDPs if you're after a Corvette. Amex Centurion holders (powerfully built company directors etc.) can get a Vette for £487 for a week in Vegas in September (vs. £610 without a code).

Try Mastercard, Visa, frequent flyer clubs, etc., to get those rates. Easily googleable to meet your circumstances.
I rented from Los Angeles LAX twice last year, both times through Expedia;

1st time booked std Convertible via National, as said above, told I could pick any car from the rows of convertibles - I took a silver Mustang cabrio.

2nd time (3 weeks ago) booked 'Luxury' saloon via Hertz (3 days, total cost £100). They tried to upsell me to a Mustang Cab, but ridiculously expensive. I then asked about a Coupe and was offered a 'basic' Camaro, which I accepted.

Turned out is was a V8, with leather, heated seats parking camera, HUD etc and... actually a convertible! Total upgrade cost was £75 including adding a driver who was under 25 (which was something like $20/day). They did, however subsequently charge my credit card for $45 fuel, despite me 'brimming' the tank 1 mile before returning and them acknowledging that it was full... but thats abother conversation!

Don't rent from Dollar in LAX, I was there in September, their car selection was terrible, aging and high mileage.

I'd booked a Premium, expecting a Chrysler 300, only to find the warehouse section bare of cars. Speaking to one of the crew, he said he'd bring a car through shortly, and after 15 minutes wait he took one of the terrible Ford Crown Victorias from the Full Size section and drove it over. I complained that it wasn't a 'Premium' car, he said 'It's all we have...'

45,000 miles on it, dented, bland and stank inside, and despite having a 5.0l V8 was slower than an arthritic tortoise.

Sadly not smile

I use if for everything in all weathers (my only vehicle) to be honest, it gets as much use and abuse as it does pampering smile

We rented a Mustang GT 5.0 from Hertz. They were very sticky to deal with, cocked up our guaranteed V6 hire Mustang (tried to tell us we could only have an Altima) and spent forever trying to flog all the bullst extra insurances when we told them we wanted to upgrade. It also cost a small fortune.

The car was tatty but usable. They do sound amazing. Having already driven a Challenger R/T and a Camaro SS on the same trip, it was certainly the most characterful of the 3, but not the "best". The Camaro SS was definitely the best car in my opinion, but I liked the Mustang more.

We drove San Fran > Palo Alto > Boulder Creek > Monterey > Ventura > San Fran in the Mustang, the views on PCH1 are just monumental.

I waited until I got to Orlando and Upgraded to the Camaro V6. Lots of Grunt and I can can confirm it has a big boot. The Opening is a bit small but we managed with two large suitcases.

I'm trying to find a decent muscle convertible (Mustang or similar) for March...

I actually need 2 rentals, as we fly to LAX on 1st March, drive to San Fran, dump car at San Fran on 5th, Fly to Vegas, stay in Vegas til the 8th (probably don't need a car there) but want to pick up another car on the 8th to travel to San Diego and then to LAX, dumping the car at LAX on 13th.

So it's 2 1-way rentals, and I'm struggling to find anything... HELP!

Out of interest when were you guaranteed the V6 Mustang? The only time they guarantee a car is with certain classes, the Stang isnt one one of them unless you have the Adrenaline collection

its worth having a look if the renter has a gold card or similar , you then fill out a profile and say F.O too all the unwanted add ons and with some luck they wont pester you , hertz and dollar are both free to join , and often have a seperate counter with less queues

I am thinking of getting the Corvette for a couple of days (i've had the Challenger R/T before). Is there enough room for a medium sized hard sized case? Or will it have to go in the front passenger seat for the trip from airport to hotel? biggrin

Booked online through Hertz in thze UK, a work thing by the guy I was with I believe. It was a special Hert web deal which gave us a printout which "guaranteed" Mustang, group 5E or something. When we got there they had us on record as a group 5. The details are wrong here, because I've forgotten them, but that's the general gist. We had an email receipt proving purchase and they were going to provide us the V6 'stang, until we asked for the upgrade.

You can get the v6 mustang guaranteed with hertz. I often see that come up on their site.

It's all about the challenger rt or corvette though biggrin

It's not a guarantee.

I speak from experience.

Oh, well that's not good, as it costs about 2x what the mustang or similar category does!

A Mustang (non-cabrio) is just a class D car in Hertz.
