Good site, thanks. Seems to be the cheapest.

If you go for the silver inclusive, you get all the insurance etc. but do they then force you to buy a tank of fuel from them at an increased rate? The gold one includes a first tank of fuel, but is nearly another hundred dollars on top of the silver price - a tank of fuel in a standard SUV won't be that much will it?

Wow no it's like 40 pence a litre over there so I would use the silver bundle then. The trick is that you have to fill up the car to full before returning so the petrol stations nearby put the prices up alot higher, in order to catch you out. If you dont fill up fully then the hire company will do it for you at a ridiculous charge. When I say ridiculous though, that is relative, so its still plenty cheaper than in the UK.

It really is a convenience thing tbh. If tou take the free tank then you are encouraged to drop the car off with next no fuel left in it.

Finally its worth mentioning that not only were this site cheapest, but they also contacted the hire company directly to help us out. We needed to drop the car off on 4th July/independance day (which the hire company was closed on that day). They helped us negotiate bringing the car in on the 5th at no extra charge.

the V6 makes more noise than power. The interior was comfortable and quite well thought out.
r.e. the V6 it is worth noting that 2011 cars onwards have the new V6 engine which has 50% more power(now 305 hp) and is quite well regarded. The old one(which is indeed wheezy) is fitted to the 05-'10 cars.

I had 4 from Budget at SFO, and a Camaro from Hertz in Phoenix. They were upgrades at reasonable prices, I'd just booked a middle of the road thing.

The only problem was they were all V6 and auto, neither car company had the V8 Mustang available as they'd all been booked out, and none seemed to have Manuel anyway

Gratuitous Camaro pic on The Apache Trail

PS - if you get the Mustang, hold the traction control button down for 10 seconds while stationary with your foot on the brake. Took me a while to work that one out

PPS - they're limited as well. I found out on the I5 when it wouldnt go any quicker

Having done a similar trip of the West coast, a mate had the stang and we had a massive CX-9 (which was amazing). I wouldn't hire the Mustang.

As suggested, if you're on a road trip get a Camero or, if you have the funds, a 'vette. You'll honestly be dissapointed with the Mustang. It really isn't special enough, especially around the West coast where every 20-something drives one. They do all seem to be V6 autos too!

That is unless you've some real desire to drive a Mustang.

Myself and Mrs Saleen rented a V8 coupe Mustang from Hertz out of LA last September, there was no pressure to prepay for a tank of fuel but we did anyway as it was slightly cheaper than the local garages, we dropped the car off at San Francisco airport after 1400 miles and a cost of £101 in petrol smile
We had pre booked a V6 soft top but on arrival they told us they had none available and would we like a Volvo convertible instead, the guy on the desk didn't get why I was laughing at him!
They had no Camaro's available either so they offered us the V8 Mustang as I dug my heels in over the paperwork I had confirming our booking of a V6 soft top which they couldn't provide.

What a coincidence, I'm just planning our US trip this year and it looks like Hertz is the one to go for, the Adrenaline collection allows you to reserve actual models etc. A Mustang GT is coming out at about £950 for 2 weeks in June.

If you are flying with Virgin you get 50% discount off Hertz.
Really? I just checked and it actually came up as a 10% discount...
I was told of this level of discount at the Hertz desk in LAX when I was getting the upgrade which was then applied to the costs.

That would make it a far better car. The new model came out just after we were there. I want one even more now!

Seems fairly common for people to book a mediocre car and then upgrade, is this cheaper than booking something bigger in the first instance?

Also people saying that they didn't have manuals, automatic is king when it comes to rental car in the US. It's a lot harder to break a slushy than a manual. When I searched a few years ago for a manual rental car, the only ones I could find were speciality cars like Corvettes and Lotus which were horribly expensive.

We had a V6 convertible Mustang in December. I thought it was gutless.

I'm probably just spoilt though
The '10 car has the altered styling but with the old engine still, so could have been that possibly? The old block has its origins in the 60s or 70s I believe.

Haven't tried the '11- myself yet but what I have read is typically fairly positive.

Finally! Found the pics of Marvin the Mustang!

Down Highway 1 somewhere

BTW, stop to eat here, http://www.lucialodge.com/

And these are from the road that goes by Area 51, well it would if Area 51 existed wink (Not to everyone's taste but I liked it after messing with photoshop and I think the looks suits the mood when I took the photo)

Just get a Camaro from Hertz. You won't regret it driving
I'm planning on doing just this in April.

I'm going on a stag in Vegas for 5 nights, but then planning to drive across the desert to Phoenix.

I originally wanted a Corvette, but seems the rental costs are high and they have limited daily mileages.

The Camaro is cheap as chips and has no mileage limit.

If anyone can recommend somewhere I can hire a Vette for a reasonable price without mileage limits then I would be very interested!

Id be interested in reading that if you do publish a blog, captain muppet. We are going from LA to Vegas to San Diego, up to San Francisco and back down the pacific coast. A lot of driving but should be fun and the main reason I want a cool car to do it in.
I did SF - LA - LV - SF with Petrolhead Nirvana in September - had an awesome trip, and wrote a blog each day for my own amusement really and as a reminder of the trip in years to come, but it might give you some tips on where to go. It's here.

Good luck, you'll have a blast!

Hertz normally have a big new year sale.
If you book thru the Eu website you used to get all the supplemenataries included.
Last year I paid £550 for 10 days unlimited miles in a corvette convertible and did SF>Nappa>SF>LA(PCH)>SanD>Vegas>LA>SF.
My prebooked vette wasnt available for pick up until day 3 so they delivered it to me and gave me a couple of tanks of gas. I had a brand new Camaro SS Convertible in lieu - fully loaded, heads up display, flappy paddles etc etc.
The Camaro boot was a joke but the boot on the vette was much much bigger and had a bigger aperture. I brought a powerflow Jeep Grand Cherokee exhaust back in the vette!
I never normally wash hire cars but I had the vette washed and detailed in vegas as it was looking a bit 'used'.....Unfortunately IMHO the Camaro is half the car that the vette is.....

I did route 66 on my honeymoon last July/August and did most of it in a Chervrolet Tahoe which was a tank but when i got to LAX i changed it for a Hertz Corvette C6 convertable. What a car! driving the Pacific Highway all the way to San Francisco with the roof down and that roar of the V8 will be a memory i take to my grave. All those twists and turns looking over cliff faces were so much fun! When people say American cars can't handle they don't know what they are talking about, it is a myth. These new models that are being built are fantastic. The corvette gripped the road as good as my old Porche Boxster S did.

Eyeing up trading in my Jaguar XKR for a Corvette ZO6. They are that good! If you can afford one, do it!

I rented that car above on a trip to Denver. I think it was with Dollar - and was only around £60 more for the week compared with a 'compact' bog-standard hire car. 100% the best money I've spent on cars, I absolutely loved my time in the 'Stang. It's no performance car, mind, but it just seemed perfect for wafting around on America's huge roads, and everywhere I went, people would compliment me on it!

That picture is taken on Pike's Peak. You can take a toll and drive the famous hill-climb course (albeit with a 30mph limit). One of my favourite driving moments ever.

I fancy a ride in a Camaro, they look mean.

Anyone ever had a new Dodge Charger? Think we will end up in Florida this year, really want a Mustang but just don't think it will happen, what with two small kids and two weeks worth of clothes.. Loved the look of the Chargers when we were last out there and I reckon a V8 one would scratch the itch nicely...
