Geoff has given good and accurate advice but this is the most important bit.

Ignore Waikiki...get out and explore...

Anyone that has anything negative to say about Hawaii has said it because of Waikiki. It really is crap when compared to everything else Hawaii has to offer. Oahu has amazing beaches and great hiking but for me the island is spoilt by Waikiki.

The Four Seasons on Maui is my favorite hotel in the world. It is comfortably luxurious in a way no other 5 star hotel I have been to can match. I would recommend riding down the volcano to the coast which is about 50 miles but no effort. You start in the middle of the night being able to see the millions of stars you normally cannot see because of light pollution.

I also like Kauai but felt the grand Hyatt hotel was a step down from the Four Seasons.

On Kauai this year 10 people have already drowned as the rip currents catches everyone out.
Another good point. In December the waves are 6ft tall as they hit the beach. Hawaii is not ideal for kids because the waves will take them out. I'm 17 stone and I was taken out many times. On one occasion I broke my toe and on another I hit the sand and had a large portion of bleeding mess on my side.

The rocks at the beach can be very nasty. Because the island was formed from Volcanic Larva there are shards of larva as sharp as needles ..always..always wear trainers or reef slippers when climbing over the rocks. I had some larva coral in my foot and it very really painful and had to be dug out. Oh and btw..we don't have snakes here either. None have made it here and they are banned from being kept as pets. The only thing creepy crawley wise you need to watch out for is the Cane Spider and the brown millipede which can really bite and doesn't let go. They can be about a foot long.

I edited this post because it sounded negative towards Hawaii. I wanted to say that I love Hawaii and will go back again and again. I recently went to St John in the Caribbean which was like heaven on the beaches but that was all it offered. If you go to Hawaii you drive from beach to rainforest to lunar landscape on one road. If you do the road to Hana, you can randomly park up and find incredible water falls in the forest and swim in the pools below them. There is an impact of the Americans but on the smaller islands it is limited and can be a benefit some times.

Unfortunately, me. The skin on the side of my body had been sanded away in the impact and had left quite a large area bleeding. I am a large (rotund) chap and so there is more surface area to sand away making it look more impressive.

The point being, Hawaii in December is not a place to take your family because the waves on the north sides of the islands are huge even when they hit the beach.

This photo could be considered typical during the day but they get much higher at times and can break on the beach above 6 ft in the evenings.

I think outside of December they are no where near as high so if you have kids book when the waves are lower.

Most of the photos in this thread are just amazing. I need to move the family to the other side of the world for a few years I reckon.

I fell in love with the people and the island on my 1st visit in 2010. These islands are steeped in history and its all there to be discovered if you want to.

Kudos

So basically what the question...Geoff wins.

When I first moved out to Zurich, I used to walk down Bahnhoffstrasse thinking to myself "wow, I live and work in Zurich!" I now realise my life is miserable and pissant compared to yours Geoff. Thanks :P

You complete b@stard!

I am lucky in that i can run my business from here. Any tradesman who are good will find work here..but you need to go through the lengthy application process.

For the 3rd day out of four this week I walked to work through morning snow. Its the end of frigging March, it started snowing the end of Oct. Five months of winter, rain, sleet and snow and frankly the "alure" of chocolate box Switzerland is starting to grate.

Posting pics of Hawaii...right now I hate you with passion and venom.

Don't believe everything to hear or see. Yes there are problems here..much like anywhere else. ie certain parts of town etc, etc. But the lifestyle, the weather etc etc far out weighs the bad things. This saturday is the last official humpback whale count ....fancy volunteering?? Gas / Petrol out here is around $4.30 a gallon at the moment. The forecast for the weekend is 80 and sunny skies with lows of 70 at night with a wind speed of around 8mph and a sun index of between 9 and extreme 12. (that means serious sunburn) The water temp in the lagoon is currently 82!!!! So its the beach for this weekend i think. Have a great weekend everyone.
