A friend of mine is going to India (Assam region) in April for 3 weeks.

She's an anesthetist and is going to do volunteer work for Operation Smile.

I want to buy her something that will be useful whilst she is there.

She will be staying in a decent hotel but working long hours in a quite stressful environment.
No idea how much spare time she will get much if previous trips she made with other organisations is anything to go by it won't be much.

So any ideas?

She is Swedish but is fluent in English so suggestions of books may be an idea.

I've looked for guide books but nothing really for the city she is staying in (Guwahati).

:-)

That part of India is meant to have fantastic food and not as "volatile" as other regions!

I have been to India a few times with work and always stay in the very best hotels and I am careful what I eat but always manage to get the "runs" unavoidable out there IMO

Lowe Alpine Carry On 40 bag, can't live without mine.

Fjällräven wide brimmed sun hat, seeing as she's Swedish. She'll probably go for that.

What the heck is that?

Carry on bag is a good suggestion.

Fjallraven is a Swedish company making really good outdoor gear.

I'd recommend the Lowe Alpine carry on as well, I have one and its been great.

I brought my sons teacher a leatherman and a small led lenser torch for her trip to uganda last year. She used both every day. Slightly more usefull gift than the bars of fancy soap and bath st she was given by other kids. Also last year i gave my best mate who went travelling through asia a led lenser and a vic nox swiss champ, again he used both daily. What about a water purifying water bottle.
Obviously if she's only got hand luggage then a multitool will end up being confiscated at the airport.
