Apologies for a very basic query but the search function appears still up the spout...

Basically considering a long-promised trip to see the obvious touristy/arty/cultural stuff for the benefit of 2 teenage kids. Plus I've always wanted to spend a day at Versailles. Probably a week maximum.

Looked at rail holidays, but a bit expensive plus the accommodation always seems to be on the fringes anyway, so considering taking the car and tunnel/ferry

So, any advice as where to stay for easy to understand, shortish transport links into the centre, whilst still being able to park the family bus up safely off street?

We Stayed in Pigalle - that'll be an eye opener for the kids. Just up the road from Moulin Rouge and Sacre Coeur and a short trip on Metro to anywhere.
Parking in Paris is free throughout August on the streets but can be tricky to find a space so we chucked the car in an underground car park - not free but pretty secure.

Park a car? In Paris? Safely? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .... Sorry...

Parking's a nightmare around Paris. Even on the outskirts it'll be hard to find anything long stay and affordable.

Your only option is to stay somewhere on the outskirts and come in by train, I think.

Versailles is wonderful, but gets VERY busy at weekends in the Summer, so go in the week (will still be busy, just not SO!).

A couple of years ago I worked for 10 days near Versailles and stayed there.

It takes about 20 minutes into central Paris on the train and is fairly cheap, but you'll not find parking easy there (even in the hotels), you'd need to go further out than that (say 45 minutes by train) to get a hotel with parking, I suspect.

Still, maybe someone else will chime in with better news smile

A non-hotel option. Campsite on the bank of the Seine in the Bois de Boulogne.

Has cabin and gypsy caravan accommodation. Shuttle bus travels to/from Porte Maillot Metro station.

A belated thankyou for all suggestions.

As an option to a hotel on an industrial estate and a 45 min bus ride twice a day I really like the Seine camping thing (was a little put off before reading closer as I thought it meant real gypsies....)

We stayed in the Hotel Chat Noir in Montmartre. Decent value hotel and within 5 mins walking distance to the tube.

If parking is required, use booking.com. Has a decent search engine and will hopefully turn something up.
