Currently in Thailand and spending last two nights in good old Bangkok, know the place fairly well but have never been to any of the famous rooftop bars, not great with heights but it has got to be done.

So which is best and why? Want to go for a couple if cocktails, maybe dinner if it is not a total rip off.

We are staying fairly central in Sukhumvit 18, so more local is better. Sky bar and vertigo seem to be most well known but bar 360 at the millennium Hilton is round the corner and reviews say it is less busy which is a plus.

What are you recommendations and why? Thanks

can't help really with really high roof-top, but Hotel Muse is supposed to have a cool bar and Lumpini is close to you.

Where are you staying on Sukhumvit 18? We are looking at hotels in that area.

I have just had a night at Vertigo (2 weeks ago now).

It was brilliant. The views are amazing, the service is amazing, the food was incredible (just steak but the best stake I've ever had).

I can highly recommend it for the experience.

(not cheap mind)

That's useful thanks FG

Staying in Rembrandt, for no other reason than location and £90/night deal through travel agent which seemed good, don't intend to spend much time there other than sleeping but reviews look ok

Thanks, like £30 per head not cheap for Thailand, or £100 per head not cheap in UK?

And did you need to book in advance?

Another vote for Vertigo. Was brilliant. As has been said, amazing views and a really nice atmosphere. Worth every penny.

It's the only one I've been to so cannot compare. I've heard though from others who have been that Lebua at State Tower (Hangover 2) is now a tad dated. And that Baiyoke or whatever its called is not great.

However, judging by photos + online reviews, that only seems true for the latter as Lebua looks very nice.

Anyway, if I had the chance again, it'd be vertigo. As for price, not bad on the price. 4 quid a beer from memory, 9 quid a cocktail etc.

We're thinking of the Rembrandt as well. Supposed to have a very good Indian restaurant, but as you say location is great.

FG - is lumpini a bar? I see a park and a boxing stadium. From Rembrandt to vertigo looks like catching MRT is best bet as I know traffic can be shocking and the MRT goes from Sukhumvit to Lumphini to get to Vertigo in 3 stops.

Any connection between lumpini and Lumphini ?

I've stayed at both the Hilton Millenium and the Banyan Tree, Vertigo gets my vote, lovely at sunset. Food was £30+ European mains iirc. I'd go for just drinks, the restaurant on the floor below (saffron?) was a lot more reasonable. But then the best food is along the sois of sukhumvit smile have a look at bed supper and q bar on soi 11

Bear in mind the dress code

We was in Bangkok 2weeks ago, and stayed at Lebua. We went up to the sky bar for a cocktail. The views are great, but is it stupidly busy, we got there early to watch sunset, we didnt stay too long as its a small area and they cram way too many people in. I think cocktails work out to about £15 each, so pretty pricey. It's nice to say we've been there though, and don't regret going, we got some great photos up there.

One recommendation, for proper Thai food, eat at Oasis Lounge at Pat Pong market. Really cheap great food!

Sorry only just saw this.

We did splash out a bit and have a couple of cocktails and some of the more expensive food on the menu, so I think it actually worked out over £100 a head. I personally think it was worth every penny. We booked 3 weeks in advance using email.
We couldn't get a table at Scirocco (LeBua) and were told we would need to book at least 6 weeks in advance.

Millennium Hilton 360 bar is quite plush, but fully enclosed with no outdoor area (IIRC) so not as dramatic as the open air ones. It was quiet when I was there with some background live lounge/jazz music, and also pretty expensive (£6-7 for a bottle of beer perhaps).

There is an open area on the roof, but I think just part of the executive lounge for guests.

Have not booked in advance but not worried about eating so will just go for some cocktails, after buying some cheap prada fake loafers or similar (have smart trousers and shirt and some smart leather shoes but they are open toed) mad

i stayed at the lebua... the room was £90 a night and was amazing... the skybar cocktails were £35-40 and were OK. I nearly shat when they gave me the bill.

that's a bit of a joke considering that if you go to RCA and buy a £20 bottle of spirits they'll treat you like Royalty and look after the bottle for you for future visits. Hot thai (non brass) locals too!
