New York on a small budget? (Hotels, specifically)

On Manhattan you'll struggle. There are some small B&Bs but they tend to fill up fast, and forget about going en-suite.
If you really do want to go on the cheap, this place was at least clean the last time I was there.

If you go out to Brooklyn you'll probably do better, Jersey City moreso.

You'll struggle to find anything in Manhattan for that price. We stayed in NY a couple of weeks ago for 5 nights and it worked out around £180 a night and that was in the New Yorker hotel. Hotels are not cheap there and depending on when you go can be stupidly expensive for what are very small rooms. If you're concerned about getting about, the subway is a piece of piss to get around and runs very quickly from Brooklyn where hotels are cheaper. TBH, the next time we go to NYC, we'd probably stay in Brooklyn anyway.
I was getting nights at Holiday Inns for that price but it was March 2011. The prices change daily and the place I was in around 27th st shot up to over $330 so I moved to better one around 57 or 59th st that was back in my budget.
These were decent on-suite rooms. I was surprised at the amount and cost of places where you had to share bathrooms though, especially as hotels in England stopped this practice back in the 70s.

I think you're probably right. We are struggling to find anything under £200 in Manhattan. Just over the bridge is this hotel:http://www.ascendcollection.com/hotel-long_island_...
It's not exactly ideally located, but seems alright. It's £150 per night, including all taxes (I think - I seriously can't work it all out).

Doesn't seem bad and you are only five minutes away from midtown by subway. I've never visited that area though so I couldn't tell you what it's like on the street. It's actually slightly cheaper at £133 per night, with breakfast and all taxes (I believe). Seems good value?

Apparently it's very 'industrial'. From a quick StreeView, it seems alright, and not 'scary'. Similar to what we stayed in when we went to Prague, I'd imagine - just nothing there, basically. (Of course, Prague was £40 a night!

Well, that one is top runner right now. There is one other which we also like... I'm not sure what 'feel' we want for the trip, as this is totally different to a hotel, but I quite like it... What do you think?
