I love the Brooklyn breweries beer! Coors / bud light are awful, certainly not so the Brooklyn IPA in my opinion. Blue Point brewery down the road on Long Island make some great stuff too.

Now... Any beer tour and/or good places to get GOOD beer would be highly appreciated. I'm not a big drinker, but do like my ales.

A mate of mine recommended the Brooklyn brewery tour: http://brooklynbrewery.com/visit/visiting-the-broo... although I've not had chance to go on it yet.

The heartland brewery pubs dotted around the city have a decent selection of well kept ales. http://www.heartlandbrewery.com/

Cheers - Brooklyn Brewery is an absolute must by the looks of things. I had already seen that mentioned elsewhere, but looked a bit further and it's a definite.

I will likely try to bring some beers back for my collection (and for my brother) as well.

As you are on a budget (like most real people and not like a stereotypical PHer) look for food bargains. For example, Bouley has a 6 course tasting menu for dinner, $175 each. For lunch you get 5 courses for $55. I am a fan of David Bouley and this is a bargain. Look out for restaurant week. If you are lucky and it is on the week you are there you will get to experience some amazing restaurants at bargain prices.
Where do you get the 5 courses for $55 at Bouley? That would tempt me, definitely.

h0b0, since you're just down the road, can you give me an idea what the best way to get to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center is?

It depends on where you are staying in NYC. My initial thought was to suggest the PATH (Port Authority Trans Hudson) train which goes to Newark Penn station. Then it is a 10 minute walk to the NJPAC. This is ideal if you are down town because there is a direct train from the World Trade Center (WTC). If you are Mid town then you can still get the PATH from 34th street (or indeed 23rd, 14th or Christopher street all on 6th ave) but you would have to change trains. The alternative is to get a direct train from New york Penn station (also 34th street) and get off at Newark Penn Station. I have used the PATH for years so this is the way I would go but that's because I am comfortable with it. Changing trains is very simple and similar to changing trains on the underground.

For those that are not familiar with the PATH service, it is an underground system that is separate from the Subway system which serves NYC. Its purpose is to bring people in to the city from New Jersey and allow them to then join the subway. It runs down 6th Ave from 34th street and turns at Christopher street to go into Hoboken. There is a second line that comes out of the WTC and over to NJ.

I didn't read far enough down... That looks pretty good, thanks. Not sure on the 'jacket' thing though, as I wasn't planning that - it may be a bit too smart for me.

Cheers h0b0. We can leave from anywhere in NY, since we'll have a subway pass anyway. I'll look it up and see if it'll be alright for us.

ETA: Can you use the metrocard on that, or is it extra cost? Just wondering in terms of process, not bothered about the cost.

Is it all back up and running again after Sandy now? I had a fun trip a week afterwards which involved a long walk in the snow...

Nice. In case I missed it, how long are you going for? I'll be there in June for a week (3rd year in a row, 5th time in total) and its my favourite place. If you're going for a week then I'd spend the $29 for a Metrocard.
Yep, that's the plan. I believe it's now $30 +$1 for a new card, but still good value for a long trip.
Wicked. There's so much to do. Great bars such as Vazacs (where Croc Dundee grabbed the woman which was a fella), McSorleys and great places to eat such as Katz's deli and Lombardi's pizza which apparently was the first pizza place in NY.

There's just too much to list. The Highline is good for a wander.

PATH accepts MetroCards that have a Pay-Per-Ride value on them. The MTA (subway) recently changed their policy to allow MetroCards to hold both Unlimited Passes and Pay-Per-Ride values on the same card. As long as your MetroCard has sufficient Pay-Per-Ride value on it to pay the PATH fare, it can be used on PATH. PATH does not accept any EasyPayExpress MetroCard.

So, yes they do accept Metrocards but not the unlimited ride ones.

Yes, Quite quickly as well. The PATH transports a lot of people to the WTC. After 9/11 the tunnels were flooded and out of action for a great deal of time. This had a big impact on the employees a the banks on Wall street.

Cheers. I thought as much. I'll just buy a ticket at the station then! $5 return, so not bad. Would a taxi be a lot more $?

Just booked to see, would you believe it, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy & De La Soul. biggrin

Seriously? I'm a huge hip hop fan and have seen PE & WTC in London. Would love to see all of them and Run DMC in NYC.

A taxi from NYC to NJPAC would be around $50 each way. Taxis in NYC are cheap but go across the state line and they get expensive.

I am pretty happy, that's for sure! Had we been staying another DAY, we could've seen them in Manhattan, but still pretty happy!

Sat up the top, but it was only $90 for the two of us.
