Unless you fancy spending hours waiting, get the express pass for the empire state (with the 102nd floor add on).
You will be up, have walked around both floors and back down at street level before the rest of the people in line who entered the building at the same time as you have even got through security- as you can skip ALL lines and go right to the front, including security and elevators.

There's also a kind of museum/memorial for the world trade centre across the road from the site. (Been a while since I went, so it may have moved).

I think you pay a charitable fee to go in. It's full of things they found, some of the plane windows that where still intact and some handguns that had been in a drawer had moulded together because of the heat is what sticks in my mind.

Also downstairs there is a room with a big screen that scrolls through all the people's names that lost their lives and messages stuck to the walls from family members.

Its really sad frown But if your there its worth seeing.

To add a bit to the above, Catz Deli sandwiches really are massive and very good - it is mentally busy in there!

The ground zero museum was very good and for a little extra do guided tours of the memorial etc wit people who witnessed it. Very informative and thought provoking, plus you also fly through security with them so it saves time.

Not sure if you will get all that done in a day, so I would pick the stuff that you are most interested by.

I'd start with Empire State building. For me it sets the context both historically and geographically. Make sure you get the headset.

For a snack go downstairs at Grand Central Station. Fantastic reminder of a bygone era.

Take an hour (round trip) catch the ferry from manhattan south terminal (not far from ground zero) to Staten Island. Some amazing views of manhattan and Statue of Liberty. Cost is nothing.

The ferry is very good for the views considering it costs you nothing.

For the breakfast, it depends where you are but one of our favourites was the city bakery. Well known for its hot chocolate.

Ferries run 24 hours. Early morning perhaps before other stuff opens?

Sounds like a good idea to me. We went in Feb which is a quiet and cold period so I have not experienced NYC at its busy times (for example we only paid for standard Empire State Building entry and barely had to wait at all). Get that ticked off and head for the busy items as early as possible?

I can reccomend the open top bus tour,it's hop on and off,and you'll get your bearings and get to see most of the main sights.

Katz deli pastrami sandwiches are awesome. Not small portions mind....

Tick Tock diner do good breakfasts and is located directly opposite Penn station.

FAO Schwartz would be an ideal place to get presents for kids.

Top of the Rock is better than Empire State Building.

Yup, I'd agree with that. And it has the added bonus that you can see the Empire State Building from the top of it

Loads of stuff in and around Times Square to get souvenirs for the kids - the toys r us, Hershey world, m&ms world etc, also FAO schwarz as mentioned above.

Carnegie Deli is also amazing for massive pastrami sandwiches and isn't far from FAO schwarz.

Another vote for the top of the rock- much better than empire state - tends not to be as busy and more room to walk around and take in the 360 degree views inc central park.

Just a word of advice - most things tend to open around 9:30/10:00. I lived in NYC for 2 years and used to see lots of european tourists walking the streets early in the morning when everyone else was commuting in and had nothing really to do.

Another suggestion, and fitting for PH is the BEAST. Its a high powered speed boat that does the hudson, statue of liberty, bridges, type boat tour - but at a much higher speed than the tedious and overcrowded ferries.

I went with the GF 2 years ago and tried to fit in as much as we could. If you want to do Empire State make sure you book online means you get to miss the queues. You will also need to book online to see the memorial site. You get given a time slot to attend but means you can plan your day around it.
Times sq is very good for souveniers. Herseys and M&M Worlds. Plus lots of places to buy the I love NY t-shirts.
If your stuck for time why not do a city tour on an open top bus? Plenty of routes to choose from and can give you a whistle stop tour via the major sites and shows you how big the city really is. Also you can get on and off as much as you want if you fancy shopping or grabbing a bite to eat.

Other cool stuff to do...
Walk through central park/carriage ride.
Visit Grand Central Station
Shop on 5th Aveneue
Rockafellla
Walk over Brooklyn Bridge
Boat Tour/Ferry to see Statue of Liberty

We got all our tickets through http://www.viator.com/New-York-City/d687-ttd if you wanted to pre-book somethings.
