2 weeks in southern Tuscany again this year.

45mins from Cecina beach, but looking for recommendations as to a nice beach around 10mins north or south of Cecina.

We'd be driving across from Volterra to it for the day.

Me, Mrs The Doc, and Baby The Doc who is 2.

Likes: quiet beaches with sand
Dislikes: crowds, pebbles, paying to sit on God's sand.

Had a few family holidays with our children in Tuscany, last went to Cecina about 20 years ago, from memory the beach at Marina di Cecina was a bit dirty, beaches to the South better but may have a lot of closely packed caravans in the forests between road and sea, my wife recalls Marina di Bibbona as being one of the better ones.

One thing about Italy is that everyone adores children, especially in restaurants, we found exploring hill towns with the children a lot more fun than going to the beach, but that may be due to my dislike of sunbathing.

The missus is from Livorno so if we were looking for a quiet beach to just chill out with friends for the day there's a place she knows that was pretty good. I think it's Marina di Bibbona. You park up in one of the side streets and then walk through a path in the woods to get to the beach. Can't remember exactly how to get there though. The main part of the beach, near town, was busy but away from there it was pretty quiet although there's no facilities (snack bars, etc) so it's a packed lunch and cool box.

Went with family a few years ago to a villa, but it was a bit inland - about an hour - did a couple of day trips to beaches near Pisa, but can't remember the names. One thing we noticed was that everything in the small towns and villages was closed on Wednesdays - shops/restaurants - which was a bit awkward when we arrived on a Wednesday.

Thanks all, we've been the last two years running, and as been previously mentioned the inland is so amazing we haven't really done much beach. This year different.

My parents used to take us about 25 years ago and I remember the beaches near Cecina being good, but it's been 25 years, so I thought I'd use the PH massive to update.

Anyhow, Marina di Bibona looks good.

1- Marina di Bibbona is fine
2- long sandy beach between Marina di Donoratico and San Vincenzo (try to get to a place called Villa Margherita on the shore)
3- gravel and wild beach between San Vincenzo and Baratti Gulf (Baratti Gulf is nice to visit, go on top to Vetulonia for the sight, forget all the restaurants)
4- great driving road between Saline di Volterra and Massa Marittima which is a gem to visit, don't miss it
5-nice country restaurant in Mazzolla, just south of Volterra, book a table outside: ph.0588.39001 and in Mensano, again book outside, 0577.592287 (not many tourists there)

Enjoy your holiday
