Anyone done anything like this?

I'm thinking driving via France/Belgium/Holland/Germany into Denmark.

From there into Sweden and then to Norway.

See some epic scenery, perhaps some camping. That kind of thing.

Which time of the year is good to go? I'd have pencilled in June/July.

I understand some roads are amazing but the police are uber strict in terms of speeding (with VERY heavy fines).

Would appreciate any advice/experiences. Thanks smile

There's a thread about working in Norway which may be of interest as well.

I have a good friend who lives just outside Karlstad which is next to the huge lake (Vanem) in the middle of Varmland.

Lovely scenery, great people IMO but they are strict on speed especially in Norway.
I remember the roads being mostly wide single carriageway going through forests.

Stockholm is a great city so worth a visit.

Food expensive and alcohol also and can only be bought at state owned off licenses at restricted times.

When I went over there years ago you could camp anywhere as long as it was 200m from a house! We went for a weeks canoeing trip which was fantastic. Just stopped when you wanted, set up camp, catch your supper in the lake or river.

Done it 3 times and all I can say is that it's a frigging expensive road trip. Fun, but expensive.

If there are any ferries that get you to Denmark or northern NL (or even NL) then take them. The drive up through France/Belgium/NL is dull to say the least. The furthest you can get without having to drive is "a good thing", even if it does cost a bit more.

Norway you can camp anywhere that's away from structures. Can't remember about Sweden.

Our route went up through Germany to the ferry to Denmark (can't remember the name), then up into Sweden across the big bridge, then Norway, out to Trollstigen, then back to Sweden and the Baltic, up over the top to the Arctic Circle, then into Finland, down to Helsinki, overnight ferry back to Oslo, and then home.

Really good fun but really needed two weeks. Great driving roads, but the speed limits in Norway were a little anemic, and I believe the fines if you get caught are generous.

I loved Norway and Finland, my wife hated Finland with a passion for some reason and much preferred Sweden. I hate Sweden, speed cameras every 200 yards.

(If you do take the ferry from Helsinki to Oslo careful about drinking on the boat as on two occasions they breathalysed every driver in the Oslo port on the way out. Literally, 10 officials came forward, breathalysed 10 drivers, and then the next ten cars came forward.)

I live in Oslo, it's a car park after 15:00. It's not the most interesting city in the world, head up to Ã…lesund and you won't go far wrong.

The roads are crap, they're under ice half the year, and the snow ploughs destroy them. Lots of tunnels, the police can be talked out of speeding fines if you pass the attitude test, what looks like a motorway on a map is nothing more than a NSL back road half the time.
