If you want a reasonably quiet area of Tenerife with lots of local character and charm have a look at Puerto de la Cruz. The area is full of original Canarian buildings and restaurants, there is very little crime and the locals are very friendly. We've been here many times over the past 15 years, usually stay at the Casablanca Appts. There is a nice beach just out of town at Punta Brava, only downside is it's about an hour drive from the airport.
Definitely appears to have a microclimate at Puerto de la Cruz due to a cloud forming steep hill rising from the capital
4 days spent here: mainly cloudy
Each day drove to a different area: los gigantes, the southern resorts, the capital; where there was clear skys and bright sun

Overall its worth trying Tenerife. The scenery and volcano inland is spectacular. The roads are pretty fun to drive as well.

Los gigantes is worth a visit for a day boat trip but not sure I'd stay there as its tiny
Beach is a little small as well
