Never been to either although often go to Italy.
We are mature couple but like both the beach in the day and a buzzy town to walk round in the evening.
Do not want English pubs and all that (no offence to those that do).
So any ideas please on location, suitability and good hotels in either.
Thanks,Steven

Figueretas might be your perfect location if going to Ibiza - decent hotels, great restaurants, quietish beaches and a 15 minute walk (via the castle if prefered) into Ibiza town, which (contrary to the popular opinion of the island) is busy but very cosmopolitan has some lovely little bars and restaurants, glasses of Rioja for a couple of Euros etc....

If you want something quieter still, look at somewhere like Es Cana or anywhere round the northern side of the Island (Portinax, San Miguel etc...) - just stay away from San Antonio and Playa d'En Bossa (although seeing at least one sunset over San An whilst sipping sangria should be on everyone's bucket list)!

I've been to Sardinia as well (albeit a long time ago) - IMHO it was nice but lacking some of the culture available in other parts of Italy, whilst still paying the premium of Italian tourism (i.e. silly prices in restaurants or bland touristy food) vs. Spain!

Tanks Tom really useful info.
I share your view of restaurants in Italy
For a change from Italy I visited Madrid and Barcelona recently and found Spain better value.

LOVE sardinia, beautiful unspoilt beaches away from the obvious spots. Felt like we were on a desert island, been back 3 years in a row...

Thanks Doublesix . Can you advise a resort that would fill my criteria as mentioned above.
I don't want it to be too remote.

Sure.

But we don't really do resorts as such. We are a couple in our early thirties but prefer to stay away from the obvious tourist traps and resorts.

The last place we stayed was the Hotel Arathena in San Pantaleo which was a most exquisite little village nestled in the mountains just a short drive from the coast. I find the holiday makers desperation to be near the beach often means the best places are slightly inland. The glitzy monoco-esque Porto Cervo is just to the north but a cursory visit confirmed our suspicions that it was all Moet bars and Rolex shops and really not our thing if you get my meaning! The beaches around there were small and heaving as everyone wanted to see the yachts and be seen in there prada shades. wink

But I like driving. So a quick jaunt down the eastern coast took us to beautiful little coastal towns, all one needs to do is look out for the 'Spiaggia' signs and you'll soon be on beach frequented by the locals.

We've also stayed on the far western side (Oristano) which was even more rural but perhaps a little less picturesque. On each visit we have made the journey to Alghero as it really is a beautiful town with lovely restaurants and a buzzing nightlife. We have also criss-crossed the interior extensively. The roads are quite simply awesome and whilst thrashing the hire car was fun enough, I longed for my own car to really carve them up. biggrin Speaking of which the coastal road that runs up the north-western side, Oristano to Alghero, has to be some of the most spectacular I have ever driven... I found myself yelling "Riiiiiiiiiiidge Raaaaaaaaaaccer" on more than one occasion.

Thanks Doublesix. I prefer not to drive when away,I just don't want the hassle.
I prefer to stay in the bustle and take days out on the bus or coach to the villages.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy driving my own cars it's just that I like to 'turn off' when I'm away. Maybe I'm turning into an old fart.

Went to Formentera last year and really enjoyed it. Es Pujols is the main town but we stayed on the south of the Island.
This place was nice but we didn't stay there.

Everyone gets around on scooters although taxis can get you around the island too.

Oh and the beach is brilliant.

Definitely Figueretas/ Ibiza Town should you plump for the white isle then - I'm pretty sure everywhere else (with the exception of Es Cana if you want somewhere a little more sleepy) will be either too british/ chavvy/ noisy or too quiet/ remote...

Just to give you the 'bad' points, the local beaches are a bit 'average' compared to what you may expect on other beach holidays/ places on the island (all kept clean and some very quiet, but not as idyllic)... That said you can get a bus to places around the island (there's a sizeable station in Town), and the neighbouring island of Formentera's a frequent trip from Figueretas and is a lovely place to bathe!...

You can also walk all the way along the beach to the far end of Playa d'en Bossa - probably too noisy/ busy to be of interest aside from it being decorated with some absolutely stunning women (it's the more 'grown up' clubbers resort) but on the other hand, no-one there tends to rise until mid-afternoon so you may have a lovely stretch of sand to walk on to yourselves earlier on! smile

Must admit I'm another who can never be bothered when on holiday, but it is 'liberating' for sure - in fact I vaguely remember (it was 1990!) seeing some amazing places in Sardinia by car, and wouldn't know Ibiza in the anywhere near the detail/ have such a high opinion on what it offers if we hadn't hadn't hired a car for just a day and hopped from place to place a few years back!
