Is the cable car thing in Grenoble worth doing?

Grenoble isn't that great I'm afraid..... if you have a car I'd explore some of the surroundings countryside - the Col de Galibier is nearby. The cable car is ok, but that's all. When you get to the top you just get views over the town which isn't terribly inspiring. Sorry.

Drive up to the Vercors plateau above Grenoble, and visit l'Abbaye de Chartreuse opposite. And get yourself onto Tripadvisor for some more suggestions.

Route Napoleon and back would be good, I did it a few years ago.

I can recommend a good car windscreen shop there. No English, but sign language pointing to a cracked screen and a calculator was just fine.

Hairpins on the D111 can be fun:

Hire a bike and cycle up Alpe D'Huez smile

Doing that in a couple of weeks on a stag do.

The whole 'La Marmotte' circuit Huez - Glandon - Croix de Fer - Telegraphe - Galibier - Lauteret is fabulous whether by car or bike.

There will be a lot of cyclists about though.

Drive to Briancon and back as fast as you can!

Or pop to the top of Galibier!
