Because of an unchangeable appointment and ridiculous Spanish flight prices in the summer holidays, I am looking at a mid-week flight to Turkey.

I have always been to Spain so know most of that but know nothing at all about Turkey except the rentals look a lot cheaper.

Would be looking for a villa with own pool so not mandatory it should be near the coast but that would be a bonus. Flight would be to Dalaman and picking up a hire car.

I just need an overview of what is good, what is bad, decent areas/resorts or scenic locations and do they use Euros etc.

Anything dangerous as we will be taking 3 kids if we go.

We go to Turkey fairly regularly and stay in Icmeler - about 5 miles from Marmaris - quieter for us oldies.

We usually rent a Fiat Punto from Dalaman Cars, who meet us at the airport. We drop the car off at their garage on return and they run us to the airport.

Remember the £10 in English notes to pay for each visa on entry to Turkey. Take some Lire with you but changing sterling is better - you get a far better rate over their. We changed US dollars there last time, and they took them and Euros without any hassle.

But beware of the great Dalaman Airport rip-off on your way back. A burger and coffee is........ £18 - no kidding. A simple small cup of coffee is £6. A piece of Pizza will set you back £7 to £8. So make up your own sandwiches and take them with you. You can't take drinks airside so will have to suffer their prices for that.

And in the local markets, barter all the time - they expect it!

And DO NOT BUY ANY TOBACCO OR CIGARETTES OFFERED TO YOU AT THE MARKETS. They are 100% fake and contain a mixture of straw and donkey poo (no kidding). Otherwise, things like perfume is mostloy fake, as are all the clothes. rarely do you find anything original.

Lastly, keep an eye on your iphone, ipads etc as the cost about 50% more over there than they do in the UK, so there is a good black market for the thieves.

PS - Sorry, you also asked about areas.

Marmaris - like Blackpool
Icmeler - like Morecambe (a place for older people and young kids as its quieter)
Oludeniz - for sporty minded people & kids
Dalian - inland but on Lake Koysegis - quiet - not much for kids
