Looks like great fun, very jealous! Would love to do something like this one day.
I've actually considered doing a similar trip in my bargain basement MG ZT, I'm just nervous about what would happen if it broke. The idea of being stranded in the middle of Germany with a broken car doesn't massively appeal.

do it, you'll be fine. I was stranded in the middle of the Canadian plains in a broken Dodge van on a public holiday weekend, 7pm on the friday. I had to walk 2 miles to get to a roadhouse to call a towtruck, and then back to the car... and then back again when it didn't turn up for hours... and then back to the car. I've never driven abroad before but have owned a LHD over here. What advice would you give?

Not too sure tbh. We were sharing rooms (either twin triple or quad) so that dropped costs a bit. We didn't stay anywhere fancy and everything was booked in advance (booking.com). Switzerland was very expensive!No breakdown cover. We were fortunate as it was only really the expansion tank leaking and consequent overheating that caused us problems. Nothing 'major' or terminal that left us stranded.
Driving a RHD car in Europe was straightforward. After a while you get used to it and it becomes second nature but the first few roundabouts you have to really think about. Be wary first thing in the morning as you can easily revert to your 'default' and pull out of the hotel on the wrong side of the road. Paying cash or card at the toll roads can be bothersome unless you have someone in the passenger.
Car was sold for scrap on its return. I think we made back £120!
It was a really enjoyable trip and if you get the opportunity to do something similar, I'd really recommend it.

I bought a River 800 (older shape) and only a few weeks later took a job in Germany.
The Rover lasted 2 weeks due to , no fail of its own, a multi car pile up on the M25.
It was replaced by a Vauxhall Senator.
Three years later I bought another 800, the 'fastback' version, perfect, I thought, for my new job in Switzerland.
Head gasket boom.
Engine management computer boom.
Anything else you can think of boom.
Through experience, I admire your patience.
