Cornwall or Lake District ?
Discussion
Have a great time!
I can recommend Lucy's on a Plate for a good breakfast or lunch:

and The Apple Pie (next to the little house on the bridge) for a good packed lunch or stodgy bun:

Thanks for all the replies !
I've booked a place in Ambleside, cant wait, I'll even enjoy the drive there .
Glad to see you’ve booked the Lakes, on top of the many other reasons I’d recommend it just because I live here! I think staying South Lakes makes allot more sense for those with a long drive up from the South, although I much prefer the north Lakes you’re adding another ~1.5 each way.I've booked a place in Ambleside, cant wait, I'll even enjoy the drive there .
A day out and loop of the Lake District is easily done from where you’re at and would recommend a drive over Hard Knot and Wrynose. Whilst driving through Eskdale a stop at the Ratty-miniature railway may be something a bit different that would interest you.
The restaurants, drives and mini railway sound great, might have to convince her about the railway though, but I'd love it having worked on the railways for 5 years.
I'm staying in a place called Brathay Lodge, can't wait.
Thanks again for the suggestions, maybe Cornwall another time out of season.

There is a visitors centre at Winlatter , it's a nice place to stop for lunch .
I'm not sure if I've done the Whinlatter, but I'd definately come back via Newlands Hause - it runs from between Buttermere and Crummock Water through to Derwent Water, is less busy than the main tourist trails and is a lovely little mountain pass:http://goo.gl/maps/TP7fO

Right opposite the pitch and putt/tennis courts.Nice looking place. If you fancy a gentle stroll out, head towards the church, wander through the park, turn left at the little bridge following under loughrigg, turn left again when you hit the main road and you'll be back at brathay lodge.
There are no Pubs on this route.
Don't forget to pay the Golden Rule a visit at the other end of town.

Grew up there, moved away aged twenty. So yes, I'm fairly familiar with the place
Zeffirellis can be quite a nice night out. Tasty (vegetarian) food and either cinema or jazz for entertainment.
As mentioned earlier, the Drunken Duck at Brathay is well regarded for food and you get a nice view if you sit across the road outside (if they still have tables over there). This can be a nice way to finish a run out if you drive out to Coniston, head over the hill to Hawkshead and drop in there on the way back to Ambleside.
