I've heard worrying reports that it's gone downhill, but when I last went (10-odd years ago), the Drunken Duck at Barngates (near Ambleside) was one of the best meals I've ever had in a pub.

Evening all,

I'm heading up to the lakes tomorrow with the OH, we're staying in a 5* place in Lakeside (southern tip of Lake Windemere).

We'll be walking the Kentmere Horseshoe one day depending on the weather. Anyone want to recommend anything closer to Lakeside, something for a lazy day!

Drive up through Ambleside and down the Great Langdale Valley, follow it until it turns left into the Little Langdale Valley and take a slow stroll along the side of Blea Tarn. There's a NT car park nearby. Stop off for a drink on the way back at either The Wainwrights in Chapel Style or The Old Dungeon Ghyll (on the right not long before the two valleys meet.)

There's also a waterfall not far off the main drag through Ambleside up a path next to the Salutation Hotel that's worth a nosy.

Absolutely loved the place, and would reccomend it to anyone!

Friendly people, didn't see any litter, and the food/beer were indeed good.

Highlights were the boat trip around Windermere, and the 2 jets and 2 helicopters ( 1 being a Chinook) flying low over the lake, we could even see a chap waving from the chinook ! And secondly, Lucy's restaurant, top notch, awesome food, and if anyone's going there have a go at their babotie - traditional South African dish.

I will go for longer next time, 2 nights wasn't near enough. One small let-down (IMO) was Wray Castle, looks lovely from the outside, unfortunately not so on the inside, crap 60's decor, I felt sorry for the old place, and hope the National Trust can raise the funds needed to restore it to its former glory, still, lovely view of it from the boat.

Also didn't get to do the steam railway, gutted, next time !

A few pics :-

Ha! Lucy's used to be a tiny independent grocers called T J Glenns. I took a job working there when I was about twelve, stacking shelves and the like.

Happy days.

Wray castle was a naval communication college when I was growing up, got on well with a few of the lads studying there.

Glad you enjoyed it!

In hindsight, it really was. At the time, we couldn't work out why everyone didn't get to wander up fells camping and stuff as kids.

Grew up just a bit further round Wansfell from Jenkins Crag.
