My wife and I are planning a trip to England, France, and Italy for about two weeks in April 2014.

We want to visit basically the big tourist spots in England and France, the Vatican and Rome, Venice, and maybe a few small villages in Italy because our families are originally from there.

Since we are going to the major tourist destinations like the Thames, Big Ben, the Eiffel tower and the museums in Paris, and Rome, my question is do you think we will be okay without a car and just using public transport to get around, at least until we visit some villages in Italy?

Can anyone recommend any favorite places to eat while there? I love shepherd’s pie and my wife loves beer!

My wife loves movies and film, and of course I love cars. Is there anything in particular in those cities that we might go see related to those interests?

Thanks,

Trevor

Do it by train - absolutely! There is certainly no reason to require a car in London or Paris due to excellent train route networks. Rome centre is so small it can be done on foot.

Obviously we have the London-Paris train link and then you can also catch Paris-Rome trains, or fly. There's a sleeper service from Paris to Rome, but I'd suggest catching a TGV to the Cote d'Azur (ie Nice) in France for a day or two and then moving on from there to Rome.

I think the more normal Paris or Nice to Rome daytime trip is to change in Milan.

Edited to add - I doubt a Texan would be able to cope with Paris/Rome driving. I would seriously advise against trying. It would be much easier out in the country to reach your villages.

London Film Museum - just opposite Big Ben, next to the London Eye.

An American driving in Paris and Rome? Tiny car (relatively). With most likely a stick shift. And a Clutch. That would be worth filming.
