As title suggests, we're going for a week to Portimao in search of sun in a few weeks.

Any tips on what to do, and see whilst there? We have a hire car so can explore a bit.

Carvoeiro is about 5 miles down the road, and that's really nice. Plus if you like that sort of thing, there's a few waterparks nearby.

Yeah, waterparks are on the list...though at least one seems to be closed this time of year!

Have a trip to Silves to see the castle. There is a restaurant called Valdemar on the main road by the river, best chicken piri piri on the algarve. I should know, we went to Guia last month and the missus had chicken every day for 2.5 weeks!

I think you can do a boat trip up the river to Silves? Never done it though.

Slide and Splash near Carveiro is good. Especially the "Blackhole"

As other have said Silves is nice and you can do boat trips, there are some nice beaches, buy a large scale local map and find the beaches that are off the beaten track and have a restaurant on them smile. These are the places where the locals go to eat.

Good boat trips along the coast too.

Hire car is a must IMO.
