I'm off to Spain for a week with a few mates, they're planning to bugger off to a theme park one of the days which isn't really my bag. Therefore, I was thinking of hiring a car/moped and exploring the local countryside.

Any particular companies that come recommended (so I don't end up in a Golf R32 *cough* situation), any tips and anything to watch out for?

I have always used one of the main companies, Hertz/Avis being the last from memory...

Prices were always reasonable. (Even for a tight Scots Git smile )

Have used Europcar from Alicante airport a few times without problems. Also chose to get the damage waiver insurance to be on the safe side and reduce the excess to nil.
Always check the car over before you drive off, last summer when we hired a car it was only when we stopped at a hypermarket we saw the scrape down the side which was done before we hired the car.
When I took it back I left a note saying this and they were fine.

Get a Repsol moped.

You'll be well cool.

Any internet company will qote you. Try DoYouSpain.com.
Regrettably, interesting cars are very expensive and I mean stupid expensive and whatever you think you're ordering, you'll get something else. Try for a petrol Focus or Fiesta, turbodiesels are utter sh*t on hills.
